After 80 years of painstaking experimentation, scientists have directly observed a sub-atomic particle that is its own antiparticle. The breakthrough promises a leap forward in quantum computing and potentially shows the path to finding dark matter.

The particles are called the Majorana fermions, after the Italian scientist who proposed their existence back in 1937. Quantum theory was in its infancy at the time, and scientists first theorized that antimatter existed: an opposite particle to the commonly-observed electrons and other particles were necessary for quantum equations to work.   Continue reading “Finally! I can’t lie; I’ve been waiting for an excuse to post a picture of a bacteriophage*, the microscopic spider virus that lands on bacteria to inject its own DNA, for a long time. This Cyborg Life gives me an excuse.

Rather than attacking typical plant or animal cells, the bacteriophage uses bacteria as its host for replication. You can’t turn on the television or radio lately without hearing a breathless report about Ebola.  Since most of our kids don’t live in bubbles, they’ve been hearing the same things you are.  If you’re worried, concerned, or downright afraid, can you imagine how a child must feel? To allay that fear, it might be time for an age-appropriate talk with them about Ebola.

I’ve always been of the opinion that if my child is old enough to ask the question, they are old enough to receive an age-appropriate answer. When my daughters were small, I’d filter the answer down to one sentence. If they were satisfied with that, I left it alone. If they asked further questions, I went into more detail. They know how much information they can handle, and I feel like, as parents, we are obligated to teach them. WASHINGTON – Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson vowed Friday to “transform and reform” the Secret Service in the wake of high-profile security failures that led this week to the resignation of the agency’s director, telling Fox News that an independent board will soon be asking the “hard questions.”

In an interview on “Special Report with Bret Baier,” Johnson said he plans to name members of that board “in the next couple of days.”

Angela Brown was charged with child endangerment and permitting a child to be present when possessing a controlled substance back on June 19.

Brown was giving her 15-year-old son Trey cannabis oil to treat his pain and seizures, which are due to a brain injury from 2011.

In light of the first case of Ebola in the United States emerging earlier this week after Thomas Duncan traveled to and from the country of Liberia to attend a funeral (and then knowing he was infected, lied on a medical form before hopping on a flight back), many people are asking why flight bans or restrictions to Ebola stricken countries have not been put in place.
