Justin Thomas and his colleagues at the GRASP Lab have produced an “avian-inspired” claw drone that mimics the way an eagle uses its talons to grab a fish out of the ocean.

A video clip of the drone shows the UAV swooping down at high speed to snatch an object using its 3D printed mechanical claw. By mimicking how a bald eagle sweeps its legs and claws backwards to aerodynamically close in on its prey without the need to slow down, the drone is able to grasp a stationary object with precise efficiency.   Continue reading “DARPA Death Bots: UAV Could Snatch Humans Right Off The Streets”

WASHINGTON — Following President Obama’s lunch meeting with Senate Republicans on Capitol Hill, Maine Republican Senator Susan Collins described the food served and said the president was not able to eat since his “taster” was not present.

“University of Maine recipe for healthy lobster salad — I pointed that out to the president in keeping with the first lady’s initiatives and Fox Family Potato Chips made in Aroostook County where I’m from and wild blueberry pie full of anti-oxidants, see this was a healthy lunch as well. We did have a little ice cream on the pie too, also made in Maine, Gifford’s Ice Cream. So in all seriousness this was well received,” Collins told reporters on Thursday after the meeting at the Capitol.   Continue reading “Obama couldn’t eat at Hill meeting without food ‘taster’”

The engineering of consent is the very essence of the democratic process, the freedom to persuade and suggest.
Edward Bernays, 1955

In his 1928 book Propaganda, Edward Bernays, the architect of modern day public relations and marketing, argues that manipulation of public opinion is necessary to overcome chaos and conflict in society. It’s a strategy that his been implemented for centuries, but most notably during the last hundred years. Stalin, Hitler, Mao and Hussein found propaganda to be an extremely effective mechanism of control over their populations, as have modern-day governments of the Western world where “freedom of the press” and government transparency are supposed to be a key tenet of an open society.   Continue reading “An Exercise In Propaganda: “Living On the Streets of Modern Day America””

Progress Texas – by Glenn Smith

The powers that be at CPRIT, the cancer research fund that Gov. Rick Perry is using as his slush fund to reward contributors, would like us to forget that it remains under criminal investigation. Texans, though, are outraged that tax money intended to find cures for cancer has been turned into just another crony capitalist wasteland.

Over the last few months, Texas media have uncovered improper grants, grants made without scientific review, grants to Perry contributors, and the resignations of dozens of agency scientists in protest of the crass commercialization of the agency and the crony capitalism.  Continue reading “Rick Perry Breaks His Promise on Cancer Research”
