USIS, the Department of Homeland Security’s contractor for conducting security clearance background checks, has had the personal records of at least 25,000 of its employees stolenbecause of hackers, and the hackers may have been from a foreign country, according to the Associated Press (AP).

HOUSTON, Texas — The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is expected to allow thousands of illegal immigrant deportees to return to the U.S., so long as they have ties to Southern California. Taxpayers will additionally fund a media campaign in Mexico, alerting deportees that they may be eligible to come back to the United States.

An agreement outlining the new settlement was announced in late August, according to the Los Angeles Times. The plan, which only applies to Southern California, was reportedly drawn up in response to a lawsuit that was filed last year by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) relating to the rights of illegal immigrants.   Continue reading “Feds Encouraging Deported Illegal Aliens to Come Back to US”

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — State corrections officials on Friday agreed to shift mentally ill inmates into separate specialized housing that will offer them more treatment instead of placing them in the same isolation units as other inmates, a decision that marks a major shift in how the system deals with such prisoners.

The agreement filed in U.S. District Court in Sacramento comes after a federal judge ruled in April that California’s treatment of mentally ill inmates violates constitutional safeguards against cruel and unusual punishment.   Continue reading “California mentally ill inmates get special units”

LONDON (AP) — The grandmother of a 5-year-old British boy with a severe brain tumor accused U.K. authorities on Monday of cruelty for seeking an arrest warrant and pursuing the family abroad after his parents removed him from a British hospital against medical advice.

Hours later, a Spanish judge ordered the parents’ detention for 72 hours while a court in Madrid considers whether to grant Britain an extradition request. Grandmother Patricia King told the BBC it was an “absolute disgrace” that her son and daughter-in-law were accused of child neglect after they took Ashya from Southampton General Hospital last week. The family says U.K. authorities had refused to give Ashya the kind of treatment he needed.   Continue reading “Spain orders custody for parents of ill UK boy”

PYONGYANG, North Korea (AP) — North Korea gave foreign media access on Monday to three detained Americans who said they have been able to contact their families and — watched by officials as they spoke — called for Washington to send a high-ranking representative to negotiate for their freedom.

Jeffrey Fowle and Mathew Miller said they expect to face trial within a month. But they said they do not know what punishment they could face or what the specific charges against them are. Kenneth Bae, who already is serving a 15-year term, said his health has deteriorated at the labor camp where he works eight hours a day.    Continue reading “Americans detained in North Korea call for US help”

BAGHDAD (AP) — The bumbling young militant first drops the rocket launcher on the toes of his boss before taking aim and firing toward a military checkpoint outside of an Iraqi town — not realizing he’s fired it backward at his leader.

The “Looney Tunes”-style cartoon targeting the Islamic State group comes after its militants have swept across large swaths of Syria and Iraq, declaring their own self-styled caliphate while conducting mass shootings of their prisoners. The group cheers its advances and beheadings in slickly produced Internet videos.   Continue reading “Islamic State group becomes target of Arab satire”

The following post is via the NRA-ILA,

The Army is talking about adopting a new pistol and, according to Maureen Mackey of the Fiscal Times, “when that happens, America’s emergency rooms better be prepared for the carnage that’s likely to follow.” Previously, freelance anti-gun writer Matt Valentine made a similar prediction in The Atlantic.

Along with their apparent predisposition against guns, Mackey and Valentine base their predictions on a 1992 claim from Daniel Webster, whose advocacy of gun control masquerades as public health research. Webster argued that as semi-automatic pistols became more popular than revolvers in the 1980s, the number of wounds per gunshot victim increased.   Continue reading “Ignorant Writers Issue Dire Pistol Prediction”

Idaho, as with most states, has a preemption statute that guarantees uniform gun laws across the state. The laws have proven to be popular in the United States. All states have some form of preemption. In New York, courts have ruled that the State handgun licensing law preempts local ordinances. The laws vary in their application by state.

In the case of Twin Falls, an old ordinance prohibited the carrying of guns in county parks. This was in violation of state law. The County board understood the violation, and voted unanimously to repeal the offending language. From magicvalley.com:   Continue reading “Idaho Town Repeals Illegal Gun Ordinance”

The US government’s web of surveillance is vast and interconnected. Now we know just how opaque, inefficient and discriminatory it can be.

As we were reminded again just this week, you can be pulled into the National Security Agency’s database quietly and quickly, and the consequences can be long and enduring. Through ICREACH, a Google-style search engine created for the intelligence community, the NSA provides data on private communications to 23 government agencies. More than 1,000 analysts had access to that information.   Continue reading “The U.S. Government Can Brand You a Terrorist Based on a Facebook Post”
