Legionnaire’s disease has broken out in the Bronx for a second time. As many as 13 people have died in the two outbreaks. Health authorities say the number of current cases has grown from 10 to 13 in two days.
One person has died in the current outbreak. All of those infected contracted the disease before September 21, and all suffer other health problems, CBS New York reports. A federal civil rights violation case against a former deputy sheriff, Sheriff Randy Esphorst, and Gasconade County was filed Monday along with a motion to allow the victim’s case to proceed under the pseudonym “Jane Doe.”
Martin Rainey, a former sheriff’s deputy who was indicted by a Gasconade County grand jury this summer in connection with alleged sexual assaults of two underage females, is named as a defendant in the “motion for leave to proceed under pseudonym” filed Sept. 28 in the U.S. Eastern District Court by Thomas E. Schwartz with Holloran and Schwartz, LLP, St. Louis. The case has been assigned to Eastern Division Judge Audrey G. Fleissig. Hurricane Joaquin gained power as it bore down on the central Bahamas early Thursday, and forecasters said it was likely to grow into a major storm while following a path that would near the U.S. East Coast by the weekend.
“At this point, it’s a powerful storm, a Category 3 storm with winds 120 miles per hour. It’s going to be bearing down on the Bahamas the next couple of days. Many of our computer models are really all over the place with where it goes from there. There is potential up and down the eastern seaboard, especially toward the Carolinas,” Storm Team 5 meteorologist Cindy Fitzgibbon said. Dr. Peter Doshi, writing in the online BMJ (British Medical Journal), reveals one monstrosity.

Ending weeks of infighting, the U.S. Congress on Wednesday voted to avert a government shutdown just hours before a midnight deadline, passing a stop-gap measure to extend funding for federal agencies until Dec. 11.
The House of Representatives relied heavily on Democrats to secure passage in a 277-151 vote. A large majority of Republicans voted against the measure, which did not meet conservatives’ demands to cut off money to women’s healthcare provider Planned Parenthood amid an abortion controversy. Another explosion has rocked Liucheng County in southern China, damaging a six-story building on Thursday – less than a day after a series of more than a dozen blasts killed seven people and injured more than 50.

A recent case in point involves an illegal immigrant in Texas. As reported by the Houston Press, Blanca Borrego and her two daughters were sitting in the waiting area of the Northeast Healthcare clinic in Atascocita for some two hours. The woman had not been in to see her gynecologist in a year, when the doctor discovered a cyst in her abdomen that had been causing her pain. Russia has struck eight Islamic State (ISIS/ISIL) targets in Syria, the country’s Defense Ministry said, adding that “civilian infrastructure” was avoided during the operations.
“Today, Russian aerospace force jets delivered pinpoint strikes on eight ISIS terror group targets in Syria. Rep Luis V. Gutiérrez, one of Congress’ most outspoken advocates for immigrants, on Wednesday called for expanding the Affordable Care Act to cover all of the estimated 11 million undocumented migrants in the United States.

Senior executives at the Department of Veterans Affairs gamed the agency to snag cushy jobs and collect a total of $400,000 in questionable expenses, a damning watchdog report charges.

The principal of a South Dakota high school was wounded by a gunshot on Wednesday and a student was taken into custody, according to officials and media reports.
The gunshot victim was in stable condition, Lincoln County State’s Attorney Tom Wollman said.
