CHICAGO — Tyson Foods (TSN), the largest U.S. poultry producer, plans to eliminate the use of human antibiotics in its chicken flocks by September 2017 — one of the most aggressive timelines yet set by an American poultry company.

SMITHVILLE, Texas — Homeowners in Bastrop County gathered Monday to express their opposition to special forces warfare training exercises in 17 cities across the southwestern United States, including Smithville.

Jade Helm 15 is a military training exercise involving 60 members to be held on private property volunteered by property owners, and the U.S. Army says residents will have little contact with the military. Four years after losing her job to outsourcing, bus driver Stephanie Hicks will get a second chance to challenge the Central Point School District’s decision to lay off its own employees and hire a private contractor.

The Oregon Court of Appeals ruled April 22 that the Medford-area school district violated state law by using an inadequate and improper process for evaluating potential cost savings. The United States and Japan will look to lead a “swift and successful conclusion” to negotiations over the highly-contested Trans-Pacific Partnership, U.S. President Barack Obama said on Tuesday.

Speaking next to visiting Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in Washington, Obama contended that the 12-country trade deal will “level the playing field” and benefit workers in the U.S. and Japan. The Finnish military used hand-held underwater depth charges as a warning against what could be an unidentified foreign submarine in waters near the capital Helsinki, amid growing tensions with neighboring Russia.

The Finnish Navy first detected an unidentified underwater object on Monday. Surface ships were dispatched to the area for a search operation. CILICAP, Indonesia (AP) — Ambulances carrying coffins arrived Tuesday at a prison island and relatives paid final visits to their condemned loved ones as Indonesia announced it will execute eight foreigners and one Indonesian man on drug charges, despite an international outcry and pleas for mercy.

The nine inmates were given 72-hour notices over the weekend that they would be executed by a firing squad, prompting a flurry of last-minute lobbying by foreign leaders. NEW YORK (AP) — A gunfight broke out on a Brooklyn street during a funeral service where at least one shooter returned fire from inside the church vestibule, leaving two dead and four others injured, according to police.

Three men opened fire on a crowd outside Emmanuel Church of God in Brooklyn’s East Flatbush neighborhood Monday evening, police said. US President Barack Obama and Japan’s Prime Minister Shinzo Abe are due to meet to discuss a significant trade deal for the Pacific Rim.

The Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) agreement is aimed at liberalising markets in 12 countries, and the US and Japan are among the biggest players.

STATEN ISLAND — An official from the Staten Island District Attorney’s office confirmed Monday morning that the off-duty Linden cop who drove the wrong way on a Staten Island highway, crashing and killing two passengers, had a blood alcohol level three times the legal limit.

On Friday, NBC reported that unnamed sources told them Pedro Abad, 27, had a BAC of .24 percent; the legal limit is .08.

Conflicting reports that a U.S. cargo ship may or may not have been seized by the Iranian military in the Persian Gulf roiled markets on Tuesday morning.

The Pentagon later reported that the Maersk Tigris did not have any U.S. citizens aboard and was traveling through the Strait of Hormuz when the incident occurred.

Al Arabiya, the Saudi news network, initially reported that a U.S. vessel has been fired on and steered to the Bandar Abbas port by Iran.
