Lawmakers in five states have introduced legislation that would enshrine the “Right to Repair” electronics, meaning manufacturers will have to sell replacement parts to independent repair shops and consumers and will also have to make their diagnostic and service manuals public.

The bills are squarely aimed at the “authorized repair” model that creates aftermarket monopolies dominated by the manufacturers themselves. For example, Apple has never authorized an independent company to repair iPhones, even though hundreds of companies do so every day (its authorized repair program is only for Mac computers).  Continue reading “Five States Are Considering Bills to Legalize the ‘Right to Repair’ Electronics”

Let’s hope you were able to get in all your binge watching before the new year, as online streaming entertainment may very well be the next thing that we enjoy slapped with a tax.

Many cities across the country have found that taxes from utilities have taken a hit with the rise in the number of people who have decided to “cut the cord” from cable companies. During the second quarter of 2016 alone, over 812,000 people cancelled their paid television subscriptions and switched to various streaming services like Netflix, Hulu, and SlingTV, which only require internet access.   Continue reading “The Netflix Tax: Coming to a Screen Near You”

SAN FRANCISCO — Peter Thiel is a billionaire, the biggest Donald J. Trump supporter in Trump-hating Silicon Valley and, above all, someone who prides himself on doing the opposite of what everyone else is doing.

So it makes perfect sense that right after President Trump proclaimed that “the bedrock of our politics will be a total allegiance to the United States of America,” Mr. Thiel was revealed to have become in 2011 a citizen of a small country on the other side of the world: New Zealand.   Continue reading “Peter Thiel, Trump Adviser, Has a Backup Country: New Zealand”

There has been endless discussion over the last few years about how we’re heading toward a cashless society and what that will mean. But never has it been as close as it is now. Numerous countries across the globe have begun actively taking steps to limit the use of currency and are rapidly initiating controls on its use.

In conjunction with government policies, some banks are beginning to charge negative interest rates, actually charging customers for depositing their money. Others have begun refusing to allow that cash be stored in safe deposit boxes. Across the board, banking institutions and government are working hand-in-hand to shut down the use of cash.  Continue reading “The Cashless Society Is Almost Upon Us”

Does former North Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory need protection? Do all current and former public officials? At least one state senator thinks so.

MOGADISHU, Somalia (AP) — At least eight people were dead and 14 injured Wednesday as Somali security forces ended a siege by extremist fighters who stormed a hotel in the capital, police said. Four al-Shabab attackers were also killed in the attack on Dayah hotel, which is often frequented by government officials, said Col. Mohamoud Abdi, a senior police officer.

Survivors described chaotic scenes in which hotel residents hid under beds and others jumped out of windows of the four-story building to escape the attackers. “They kicked down room doors and at some point posed themselves as rescue teams by telling those inside to come out (only) to kill them,” said Hassan Nur, a traditional Somali elder.  Continue reading “Extremist gunmen storm hotel in Somali capital, 8 killed”

Early to bed and early to rise might make you healthy, wealthy and wise, but stashing $17.5 million in your mattress could land you in federal prison.

At least, that’s what will happen if those bills turn out to be ill-gotten proceeds racked up during an elaborate intercontinental pyramid scheme, according to the U.S. attorney’s office in Massachusetts. Federal prosecutors say they’ve charged a Brazilian man, Cleber Rene Rizerio Rocha, 28, with money laundering. Agents also seized over $17 million in cash hidden in a bed box spring at a Westborough, Mass. apartment, prosecutors said.  Continue reading “Feds seize $17.5 million hidden in mattress”

Connected vehicles are booming – they’re often mentioned in the same breath as autonomous cars, but are much more achievable from a technical perspective. Car makers are increasingly making on-board cellular data connections a standard option, too, and now we have some insight into why – a survey of automotive company executives found that they share the opinion that connected cars are huge revenue generators, with around 10x the earning power of the average non-connected vehicle.   Continue reading “Automotive executives see 10 times more revenue potential in connected cars”
