HB 4145, Kate Brown’s gun confiscation bill, passed the Oregon House Thursday on a 37 to 23 vote.

The bill got the vote of every House Democrat except Caddy McKewon,  who has supported previous gun confiscation bills. She must be reading her mail.

Students at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High may not have to return to the three-story building that was the site of the deadliest school shooting in Florida history.

The school district has proposed tearing down the building on campus that housed freshmen, Broward Schools Superintendent Robert Runcie said Friday. It was the spot where many of the 17 students and faculty were murdered Wednesday by a gunman with an AR-15-style weapon. Austrian snowboarder Markus Schairer’s quest for Olympic gold was cut short when he broke his neck in a horrible fall during the men’s snowboard cross quarterfinals Thursday.

As he descended from a jump, Schairer’s board started to tilt upward and as he came closer to the ground, he landed with all momentum on his back. In a slow-motion video, his head snaps back and hits the ground before the goggles fly off from his mask and he lies for a few moments on the ground. Hundreds of people attended vigils remembering the 17 victims who were killed in a school shooting in Parkland, Florida on Wednesday, with the sheriff responsible for overseeing the case telling attendees at an evening gathering that gun laws must be fixed.

The county sheriff in charge of investigating the mass school shooting in Parkland, Florida, pleaded with lawmakers on Thursday to give police and doctors more power to involuntarily hospitalize people for psychiatric evaluation over violent and threatening social media posts.

Millville, NJ — Disturbing dashcam footage of police shooting and killing an unarmed mentally ill man was released this week. The video has sparked debate because the man was unarmed, however, he was holding an “unidentified object” in his hands when police opened fire.

The dashcam video is from the police cruiser belonging to Millville police officer Colt Gibson. On January 22, Gibson and several other officers responded to the intersection of North High and McNeal streets. A troubled ninth grader has been arrested after threatening students and staff at a school in eastern Spartanburg County, South Carolina with “Round 2 of Florida tomorrow” via a Snapchat post, according to the local sheriff’s office.

Highline College in Washington state is on lockdown after reports of gunfire on the campus south of Seattle, the college said Friday morning in Facebook posts and automated phone recordings.

John’s freshman year at James Madison University started out great. He did well in his classes. He made friends easily. He even started dating a fellow student. But just a couple weeks into his first semester, John’s world came crashing down. The girl he had been dating accused him of sexual assault and took her charge to the campus authorities. James Madison promptly conducted an initial hearing and found that John was “not responsible.”
