A two-decades-old battle between a Nevada rancher and the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has resulted in officials armed with machine guns surrounding the ranch and forcibly removing the owner’s cattle, according to the rancher’s family.

Cliven Bundy, the last rancher in Clark County, Nev., has been fighting a “one-man range war” since 1993, when he decided to take a stand against the agency, refusing to pay fees for the right to graze on a ranch run by his family for centuries.   Continue reading “Last Man Standing”

LOS ANGELES, CA — A scandal has been discovered inside the LAPD, in which nearly half of the squad cars in one division had their recording equipment tampered with, making accountability more difficult for the dozens of officers involved.  The troubling discovery was exacerbated by police supervisors who made little effort to keep the oversight commission informed.

An audit of the Southeast fleet showed that out of about 160 vehicles, 72 were discovered to have had antennas removed, the LA Times reported.  The antennas are part of a system that allows cruiser footage to be accompanied by detailed audio, even when the officer is far away from his vehicle.  The audio is collected through microphones worn on officers’ clothing, which is sent back to the cruisers via a transmitters attached to officers’ belts.   Continue reading “Recording equipment went missing in half of LAPD cars examined”

The U.S. Navy is planning sea trials for a weapon that can fire a low-cost, 23-pound (10-kg) projectile at seven times the speed of sound using electromagnetic energy, a “Star Wars” technology that will make enemies think twice, the Navy’s research chief said.

Another US military ship is set to be deployed in the Black Sea amid the Ukrainian crisis. The US Navy destroyer Donald Cook will join the USS Truxtun, whose stay in waters bordering Russia was extended to ‘conduct drills’ with Romania and Bulgaria.

“We’ll also send another ship to the Black Sea within a week,” Derek Chollet, the US Assistant Secretary of Defense for International Security Affairs told the House Armed Services Committee, as he said the Department of Defense sanctioned to prolong USS Truxtun’s stay in the Black Sea “to conduct exercises with Romanian and Bulgarian naval forces,” after it left the region on March 21.   Continue reading “Second US Navy destroyer heads to Black Sea”

BOSTON (AP) — President Barack Obama’s aunt Zeituni Onyango, who was denied asylum in the United States but stayed illegally for years, died Tuesday at age 61.

Onyango, whose immigration status was reported by The Associated Press days before Obama’s election in 2008, had been treated in recent months for cancer and respiratory problems, Cleveland attorney Margaret Wong said. DETROIT (AP) — A teenager and two men were charged Tuesday in the brutal beating of a suburban Detroit man after he accidentally hit a child who stepped off the curb into the path of his truck.
