Washington, D.C. – Congressman Frank Lucas today made the following statement after the U.S. House of Representatives passed H.R. 4118, the SIMPLE Fairness Act. This legislation passed the House today with a 250 to 160 vote.
“As Americans continue to struggle with President Obama’s Affordable Care Act, it is important that we continue to work in Congress to provide relief from the flawed law,” said Lucas. “The Administration has already admitted the law is unworkable and delayed the employer mandate for a year. Now, it is time to provide the same relief for American families and individuals, and I am pleased the House passed the SIMPLE Fairness Act to help accomplish this goal. Twenty-seven Democrats on Wednesday sided with House Republicans on a bill to delay tax penalties for failing to buy health insurance this year under ObamaCare.
The vote, which reflects growing Republican frustration with President Obama’s selective implementation of the law, again shows some level of Democratic support for a legislative change to the law. Several House bills aimed at making the health law more transparent have also received support from a few dozen Democrats. At GOA’s request, Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) has bypassed Harry Reid’s stranglehold on the Senate by bringing a pro-gun bill directly onto the Senate calendar.
The bill is H.R. 4118, and it was approved by the House of Representatives on Wednesday by a 250-160 vote. (See the vote here, with “Yea” being the pro-gun vote.) The bill would suspend the individual mandate of the anti-gun ObamaCare program for one year, thus protecting the privacy of gun owners. Do you have an emergency kit in your vehicle?
Disaster never lets you know ahead of time when it’s going to strike. In most cases, a person is out doing what they do every single day, like driving to or from work, when an emergency occurs. Sometimes people are on a recreational outing. Whatever the case, it pays to be prepared. This can de-escalate a potentially life-threatening crisis down to an inconvenience.
I’ve written about a couple of incidents recently that resulted in people being stranded with only the supplies in their vehicles. Last winter, a family was stranded for days in the frigid wilderness of the Nevada mountains during subzero temperatures. More recently, a freak snow storm hit the Atlanta, Georgia area causing a gridlock that left many travellers trapped in their vehicles overnight. A number of East Williamsburg and Bushwick residents were surprised by a combined federal and NYPD raid on Devoe Street early Sunday morning. Some were disturbed by a loud, low-flying helicopter, while others were simply stopped from going home because the street was blocked off.
Witnesses spotted a big Department of Homeland Security truck as well as DHS agents toting machine guns as they raided 221 Devoe Street. The NYPD was also involved, and one officer told a resident that the bust turned up “kilos of heroin.” (Apparently the drugs may have been from out of the country, hence DHS.) WASHINGTON, D.C. — A fast-growing foreign-student work program is taking jobs from U.S. citizens, while its “alarming mismanagement” poses a national security threat, critics charge.
“Foreign students, sometimes aided by school officials, are currently abusing the Optional Practical Training program to acquire unauthorized employment in the United States,” said Sen. Individuals in Mexican military uniforms drew their guns on a U.S. border agent earlier this year after having crossed the southwestern border into Arizona, a U.S. senator claimed, raising concerns once again that Mexican officials are illegally crossing into the U.S. and, worse, potentially aiding the drug cartels.
The incident described by Sen. Tom Coburn, R-Okla., would appear to be one of dozens over the past decade where Mexican military and law enforcement officers have crossed into U.S. territory.
