“Jingle Bells,” one of the most well-known Christmas carols in the world, is now being called racist.

A Boston University theater professor claims the Christmas carol has a “problematic history” because it was originally performed to make fun of African Americans.

“The legacy of ‘Jingle Bells’ is one where its blackface and racist origins have been subtly and systematically removed from its history,” Kyna Hamill, a BU theater historian, wrote in her “Theatre Survey” research paper on the story of “Jingle Bells.”   Continue reading “‘Jingle Bells’ rooted in racism, Boston University professor says”

A former Facebook executive, who openly admits to not using social media, has come out about the role he played in “ripping apart the fabric of society.”  Chamath Palihapitiya has publicly declared that he didn’t really understand “the consequences” of what he was doing.

This isn’t the first time a social media powerhouse has come forward with regret for helping create a social media platform either. Facebook’s first president, Sean Parker, opened up about his regrets over helping create social media as we now know it last month. Parker has said that social media creates “a social-validation feedback loop” by giving people “a little dopamine hit every once in a while because someone liked or commented on a photo or a post or whatever.”   Continue reading “Former Facebook Executive: ‘You Don’t Realize It, But You Are Being Programmed’”

One hears about China’s legendarily harsh anti-drug laws, but is it really so awful to try to get high in China? Paradoxically, in a country with some of the tightest drug laws in the world, hashish and marijuana can be bought and sold on the streets of a megalopolis like Shanghai and dirt-road villages alike, usually with only slight concern for legal repercussions. Cultural eccentricities aside, buying cannabis in China is a largely familiar and comfortable scene to anyone who’s had to buy illegally elsewhere.   Continue reading “How Difficult Is It to Get Cannabis in China?”

We’re not sure if this car went over a river, but it looks like it took the woods with it.

Police in Sudbury, Mass., posted an image to Facebook of a car they stopped on the day after Thanksgiving with an enormous Christmas tree on its roof that appears to be poorly secured.

The unwrapped evergreen dwarfs the Mazda5 minivan it’s strapped to, hanging over the sides and the rear, blocking the windows and obscuring the license plate.   Continue reading “Massachusetts police stop car with massive Christmas tree on top”
