A veteran San Antonio police was shot and killed before noon Sunday while performing a routine traffic stop near police headquarters downtown, officials said, prompting a citywide search for the gunman.

SAPD Chief William McManus said the shooting occurred on the south side of SAPD headquarters, at 11:45 a.m. where the officer, identified as Detective Benjamin Marconi, was issuing a traffic citation. El Centro, CA — A graphic video has surfaced on Facebook showing a half dozen police officer beating a man while their K9 tore into him. The El Centro Police Department has since opened an investigation.

California has some of the worst shield laws in the country. These laws are written to indefinitely conceal officer records from the public view when officers are investigated for misconduct or disciplinary actions are taken against them.

Former police officer Noah Winchester was placed on indefinite leave from the San Mateo Police Department last October.
