Eco-Watch – by Cole Mellino

The April 1 snowpack assessment in California, which set an all-time record for lowest snowpack levels in the state’s history, finally spurred Governor Brown’s office to issue an executive order to residents and non-agricultural businesses to cut water use by 25 percent in the first mandatory statewide reduction in the state’s history.

But some groups have been exempted from the water restrictions, specifically big agriculture, which uses about 80 percent of California’s water, and oil companies. Democracy Now! discussed on their show today the new mandates and the implications of exempting some of the biggest water users in the state.   Continue reading “Drought-Stricken California Exempts Big Oil and Big Ag from Mandatory Restrictions”

“Middle class” doesn’t have a definite, official definition. But the Pew Charitable Trust defines it as households that earn between 67 and 200 percent of a state’s median income. Based on this metric and some statistics, Business Insider came up with a list of how much you have to earn to be considered middle class, depending on your state.

Pew analyzed numbers from the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2013 American Community Survey (the most recent) and found that the middle class has shrunk in every state between 2000 and 2013. Business Insider looked at the survey, too, then crunched some numbers based on Pew’s definition of “middle class” to come up with their list.   Continue reading “The Salary Required to Be “Middle Class” in Every State”

The 4th Circuit Court of Appeals, once considered one of the most conservative in the country, has moved to the left in recent years. But if you think that means it is showing a greater regard for individual rights and civil liberties, think again. According to a ruling the court handed down on March 13, the appropriate range of punishments for possessing a small amount of marijuana includes summary execution.

In 2005 (the wheels of justice can grind exceedingly slowly) the police in Cambridge, Md., acted on a tip and found a small amount of marijuana residue in a trash can. At 4:30 a.m. on May 6, a SWAT team executed a search warrant on the apartment of Andrew Cornish. A jury would later find the commandos failed to knock and announce themselves properly. As they rushed through the apartment, Cornish came out of the bedroom with a sheathed knife in his hand. The police say he advanced on them. One of the officers shot Cornish twice in the head, killing him.   Continue reading “Hinkle: How to kill someone and get away with it”

Slamming world powers’ framework nuclear deal with Iran, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Friday demanded that any final deal include a “clear and unambiguous Iranian recognition of Israel’s right to exist.”

Netanyahu has been perhaps the most vocal critic of nuclear talks with Iran, insisting again and again it can’t be trusted. He took his case to the U.S. Congress last month, at a time before negotiators had hammered out any sort of agreement, over the objections of President Barack Obama.   Continue reading “Netanyahu: Iran must recognize Israel’s right to exist in deal”

Many adverse side effects and even deaths are occurring due to medical negligence. Specifically, this is due to the irresponsibility of scientists who are not reporting the results of their clinical trials to the public, as required by a 2007 law.

According to a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine, the public access website clinicaltrials.gov draws 57,000 visitors a day, including people who are confronting serious diseases and seeking help to treat them with experimental drugs.   Continue reading “‘Millions Affected’ As Scientists Hide Side Effects from Medical Treatments”

The Indiana pizzeria owners under fire for their stated refusal to cater a gay wedding responded gratefully Thursday to a massive outpouring of financial and moral support, including more than $250,000 in donations.

“Once the other folks started supporting, and we were getting support from the other side, it really bolstered us and made us feel a lot better and more comfortable,” Kevin O’Connor told Dana Loesch in an interview on The Blaze. “There was so much negativity. It beats you down to nothing.”   Continue reading “Indiana Pizzeria Owners Respond To Outpouring Of Support”

If you exercise your right to bear arms, be very careful who you take up with. Given how grudgingly the authorities acknowledge this precious right, an unscrupulous ex could give you a very hard time:

In the words of Cambria County [Pennsylvania] Sheriff Bob Kolar: some people collect model cars, some people collect motorcycles, some people collect guns.

One middle-aged Cambria County man is a collector of the latter. When an angry lady friend decided to strike out, it was in the direction of those guns that she struck. Continue reading “$1,200 Fine for Having Gun Collection Confiscated”

Imagine a world in which the government has free access to your private medical records for the purpose of ensuring your compliance with official vaccination mandates. The United States is on the cusp of such tyranny with an Immunization Information Systems (IIS) program currently being built by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) that will make your vaccination status available to health authorities, healthcare providers and “other authorized stakeholders.”

WASHINGTON (AP) — A weakening U.S. economy spilled into the job market in March as employers added just 126,000 jobs — the fewest since December 2013 — snapping a 12-month streak of gains above 200,000.

The unemployment rate remained at 5.5 percent, the Labor Department said in its monthly report Friday. The March jobs data raised uncertainties about the world’s largest economy, which for months has been the envy of other industrialized nations for its steadily robust hiring and growth. Employers now appear wary about the economy, especially as a strong dollar has slowed U.S. exports, home sales have sputtered and cheaper gasoline has yet to unleash more consumer spending.   Continue reading “Hiring slowdown: US employers added just 126K jobs in March”
