WE LIKE TO think of the drone war as something far away, fought in the deserts of Yemen or the mountains of Afghanistan. But we now know it’s closer than we thought. There are 64 drone bases on American soil. That includes 12 locations housing Predator and Reaper unmanned aerial vehicles, which can be armed.

Public Intelligence, a non-profit that advocates for free access to information, released a map of military UAV activities in the United States on Tuesday. Assembled from military sources — especially this little-known June 2011 Air Force presentation (.pdf) — it is arguably the most comprehensive map so far of the spread of the Pentagon’s unmanned fleet. What exact missions are performed at those locations, however, is not clear. Some bases might be used as remote cockpits to control the robotic aircraft overseas, some for drone pilot training. Others may also serve as imagery analysis depots.   Continue reading “Revealed: 64 Drone Bases on American Soil”

With the phenomenal ability to watch news unfold moment by moment comes the unspoken responsibility of vigilance—both in watching for distraction and in not allowing matters of importance to slip from the spotlight. Issues tend to vanish after a maximum of two weeks spent debating every conceivable aspect, at which point—whether resolved or not—apparent aggregate memory loss sets in. Unfortunately, that is exactly what has happened with the indefinite detention provision passed into law as part of the 2012 NDAA. As the Senate took the callous opportunity afforded by the shooting in Charleston to ram through its veto-proof approval of nobody’s favorite legislation for fiscal year 2016, another golden opportunity to bring the egregious law to the forefront passed right by.   Continue reading “US Senate Passes 2016 NDAA as the Country Mourns for Charleston”

Not everyone’s happy with Mayor de Blasio’s surprise decision to add close to 1,300 officers to the NYPD’s ranks.

The head of the police union said Tuesday that the paltry number is just a “drop in the bucket.”

“We have lost nearly 7,000 (cops) since 2001,” Patrolmen’s Benevolent Association President Pat Lynch said in a statement. “Understaffing not only empowers criminals, but it leads management to make bad policy decisions.”   Continue reading “Police union, advocates critical of decision to add 1,300 cops to NYPD”

When it comes to preventing the kind of blood loss that is caused by traumatic injury, there are only so many options to choose from. Until you get to the hospital, you’re mostly limited to applying pressure to the wound, or forming a tourniquet. Fortunately there have been some pretty impressive advances in the emergency medical field, such as QuikClot, which has proven to be a revolutionary life saver. However, there’s a new type of field dressing that will be hitting the market this year, and it may prove to be far more impressive than QuikClot. It also might be replacing a significant portion of your first aid kit by the end of the decade.   Continue reading “New Plant Based Gel Can Stop Bleeding in Seconds”

Two New York police patrols were attacked in the Bronx and Harlem, with officers suffering fractures, scratches and bruises. One union boss argued the violence against officers was a result of politicians scapegoating the police.

An attack in Manhattan’s Harlem neighborhood was caught on video. The recording, titled “NYPD officers getting pummeled by onlooker during arrest,” has attracted nearly 100,000 views on LiveLeak.   Continue reading “NYPD cops punched, kicked and scratched in attacks”

WASHINGTON — The Senate on Tuesday handed President Barack Obama the biggest legislative victory of his second term, with a dramatic vote clearing the way for major trade agreements with Pacific Rim nations and the European Union.

The vote all but ensures the passage of legislation that will allow Obama to “fast-track” the trade pacts he negotiates through Congress, preventing filibusters or amendments. Liberals have long assailed Obama’s trade agenda, but Republicans successfully wooed a bloc of Democrats led by Sen. Patty Murray (D-Wash.) and Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) to secure enough votes to overcome a filibuster.   Continue reading “Senate Gives Obama Huge Win On Trade”

The WHO cancer research unit has deemed 2,4-D, the active ingredient of Dow’s herbicide – once used in infamous Agent Orange – as ‘possibly’ causing cancer. The chemical ranked one behind the ‘probably carcinogenic’ glyphosate in Monsanto’s Roundup.

Upon careful review of scientific data regarding 2,4-D, a chemical used for a Dow AgroSciences product, WHO’s International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) unit has determined that the weed killer be classified as “possibly carcinogenic to humans.”   Continue reading “WHO labels 2,4-D herbicide as ‘possibly’ causing cancer”
