WEB Notes: There is currently a bill sitting with the US Senate that would provide yet more intervention in Syria. Here is a summary of this bill.

“H.R. 5732 requires the Departments of State and the Treasury to impose sanctions on people and entities responsible for the security and humanitarian crisis in Syria. The bill also authorizes the Department of State to assist entities that are investigating war crimes or crimes against humanity in Syria, and requires reports to Congress on the implementation of the Act, ongoing assistance programs for the Syrian people, and the feasibility of establishing a no-fly zone over Syria. Sanctions authority would expire on December 31, 2021, and sanctions can be suspended if the parties are engaged in meaningful negotiations and the violence against civilians has ceased.”

FRONTON, Texas (AP) — A Texas state trooper was wounded on the Texas-Mexico border when a bullet apparently strayed from a gunbattle on the Mexican side of the Rio Grande.

Hillary Clinton’s campaign on Saturday said that it would participate in a recount initiated by Green Party nominee Jill Stein in Wisconsin and said it would take similar action if a recount was initiated in Michigan and Pennsylvania.

The campaign has taken a number of steps since election day to review election results and has not found “any actionable evidence of hacking or outside attempts to alter the voting technology,” Marc Elias, the campaign’s general counsel, wrote in a statement on Medium. The campaign had not planned to call for a recount, Elias wrote, but now that one is underway, it felt an obligation to participate. Hillary Clinton’s loss was a shock to the purveyors of U.S. military hegemony, who saw in her an easier path to keep the Syria conflict going. Secretary of State Clinton was instrumental in the early days of Syria intervention, in 2010 making a series of demands for Syria to get in line behind the U.S. vision for the Middle East.

When Bashar al-Assad refused to roll over, regime change became the talking point of Washington think tanks and mainstream media echo chambers. Clinton promised during her campaign to ramp up action in Syria, to the delight of the same neocons who brought the Iraq invasion. A giant among giants and a beacon for countless tourists driving through the Columbia River Gorge is dead.

The accurately named Big Tree, a massive ponderosa pine near Trout Lake in the Gifford Pinchot National Forest, was hundreds of years old.

JERUSALEM (Reuters) – Israeli police arrested 13 people on Friday on suspicion of arson, authorities said, after massive wildfires tore through central and northern Israel, a conflagration that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu branded as “terrorism”.
