Charleston police say one person has been killed and another has been rushed to the hospital, as hostages remain trapped inside Virginia’s on King restaurant with an “active shooter.”
King Street is currently closed between Calhoun and Morris Streets. Hostage negotiators are the scene along with medics and SWAT.

The existence of a swastika emblazoned anchor in a public park is being defended by a Canadian mayor, after an activist tried to erase the symbols.
The local government of Pointe-des-Cascades, Quebec, has denied the artefact in Parc des Ancres promotes hate and explained how the anchor dates back to before World War II.
Discovered 25 years ago by divers in lakes Saint-Louis and Saint-Francois, the large iron piece, which prominently displays a Nazi symbol, is part of a historical display close to a museum, according to the municipality. Continue reading “Our swastika anchor doesn’t endorse Nazism – Canadian mayor”
BEIRUT (AP) — As Damascus reverses military losses in much of the country’s strategically important west, and foreign states cut support for rebel forces, diplomats from Washington to Riyadh are asking representatives of Syria’s opposition to come to terms with President Bashar Assad’s political survival.
The country’s civil war has crossed the halfway point of its seventh year and Assad and his allies are now in control of Syria’s four largest cities and its Mediterranean coast. With the help of Russian air power and Iranian-sponsored militias, pro-government forces are marching steadily across the energy-rich Homs province to reach the Euphrates River valley. AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — A federal judge who has compared Texas’ voter ID requirements to a “poll tax” on minorities once again blocked the law Wednesday, rejecting a weakened version backed by the Trump administration and dealing Texas Republicans another court defeat over voting rights.
U.S. District Judge Nelva Gonzales Ramos rejected changes signed by Republican Gov. Greg Abbott this summer as not only lacking but also potentially chilling to voters because of new criminal penalties. The new version didn’t expand the list of acceptable photo identifications — meaning gun licenses remained sufficient proof to vote, but not college student IDs. Like many events that end up with a person in handcuffs, my story begins in a bar. I was in Atlanta earlier this month for Netroots Nation, the annual meeting of progressive organizers and writers, when I overheard friends discussing how to resist President Trump’s first visit to Trump Tower. I jumped into the conversation: “Well, you call me, of course.” Twenty minutes later, we had a rough plan that we would unfurl a banner inside Trump Tower the following week. I have been to many protests since the inauguration, and I was proud to do my part. Continue reading “I was detained for protesting Trump. Here’s what the Secret Service asked me.”

The German Chancellor faced a barrage of loud protestors during her pre-election tour, as she stopped to give a speech to crowds of around 4,000 people at Bergisch-Gladbach.
For about 40 minutes the CDU boss talked freely about her vision of a Germany, where everyone can “live comfortably again.”

San Francisco police will be out in force Saturday for a rally that is expected to draw white supremacists and counter-protesters who have clashed violently in the past.
San Francisco Police Chief Bill Scott said he hopes a large police presence can prevent the kind of violence seen in Virginia and elsewhere.
While San Francisco officials cannot stop the permitted gathering at the Golden Gate National Recreation Area by the Patriot Prayer group, Scott said his officers would work to keep the peace. On August 21, 2017, Donald Trump gave an address on U.S. Policy in Afghanistan AND South Asia. After 17 years of being in Afghanistan, he said the U.S. needs to go back in and stay in there until the country is under control. Then he pandered to the soldiers.. telling them how great they are for their sacrifice. I wonder … do they really know what they are fighting for? They are fighting to serve the wealthy and oppress the poor.
The target country is NOT Afghanistan… it’s Pakistan – and possibly India. And the objective is a G– D— road with police state surveillance, command and control technology – just like the NAFTA Superhighway. The so-called “terrorists” they will be fighting will be the Pakistani’s who live on the corridor routes who will have their property stolen from them just like our government has done to people on our corridor routes – people like Cliven Bundy, the Hammonds, David Koresh and others I can’t name – but that I know exist. There is no doubt that Trump will get a couple of golf courses out of it at the transportation hubs (inland ports).

Police in North Carolina can pull over motorists even if they have committed no traffic violation. The state’s highest court on Friday approved the stop of a man whose pickup truck fishtailed slightly while making a left-hand turn on a snowy road.
The North Carolina Court of Appeals had reviewed the case and found the driver, James L. Johnson, had done absolutely nothing illegal. The unanimous three-judge panel struck down the traffic stop as unconstitutional, but the high court justices last week insisted on declaring the officer’s actions as legitimate, reversing the lower court’s decision. MorphoTrust (MT) is trying to convince motorists that mobile biometric driver’s licenses (MDL) are a good thing. Two years ago MT convinced the Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) to pilot their mobile driver’s license program.
MT wants you to download an image of your driver’s license to your smartphone and use that instead of a physical license. A KTVQ video revealed how the MT app uses facial recognition to verify an individual’s identity. Continue reading “Mobile biometric driver’s licenses coming to a state near you”
Tucson-based Raytheon Missile Systems has been awarded a $900 million contract to develop the nation’s next-generation air-launched nuclear cruise missile.
Frequent competitor Lockheed Martin was awarded a similar, 54-month contract to develop design concepts and technologies for the new Long Range Standoff weapon, the Air Force said Wednesday.
When those contracts are completed, the Air Force Nuclear Weapons Center at Eglin Air Force Base in Florida will select a single contractor to further develop and produce the new weapon.

China appears to be laying the groundwork for the mass collection of DNA samples from residents of a restive, largely Muslim region that’s been under a security crackdown, rights observers and independent experts said on Tuesday.
Police in western China’s Xinjiang region confirmed to The Associated Press that they are in the process of purchasing at least $8.7 million in equipment to analyse DNA samples.
Observers from Human Rights Watch said they’ve seen evidence of almost $3 million in additional purchases related to DNA testing. They warned such a collection program could be used as a way for authorities to beef up their political control. Continue reading “China buys equipment to expand DNA testing in Muslim region”
