Walter Becker once explained Steely Dan’s most affectionate satire, “Deacon Blues.” “The protagonist is not a musician. He just sort of imagines that would be one of the mythic forms of loserdom to which he might aspire. And you know, who’s to say that he’s not right?”

Mythic loserdom was the turf Steely Dan chronicled like no other rock & roll band. They dwelled in Raymond Chandler’s L.A., not Brian Wilson’s or Jackson Browne’s. (Although they shared plenty with Wilson and Browne as well.) And Walter Becker was the more elusive half of this most elusive of duos – the invisible genius of Seventies rock, rarely photographed, never speaking a word in public. Long hair parted in the middle, about two-fifths of a beard, glasses designed to hide behind. If you can find a 1970s photo where this guy isn’t sneering at you, I’ll shake your hand.   Continue reading “Farewell, Walter Becker: Remembering the Elusive Genius of Steely Dan”

The Cleveland police union will protest the national anthem in protest of national anthem protesters.

Under the thinking that you can’t protest a flag that doesn’t exist, the union said it will launch an upcoming counter-protest, in which they vow they won’t hold the American flag for a pregame ceremony during the Browns’ season opener Sept. 10. A dozen Browns players, including the first white anthem protester, took a knee during “The Star-Spangled Banner” in an Aug. 21 preseason game.   Continue reading “Cops are launching their own national anthem counter-protest”

President Donald Trump is expected to announce the end of an Obama-era program that allowed undocumented immigrants who came to the U.S. as children stay and contribute to the country, sources told Fox News late Sunday.

An official announcement to the end of the program will be on Tuesday, the sources said. After the announcement, Congress will have a six-month window to act.

The program, Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, was established in 2012. DACA, as it is usually referred to, protected young immigrants who came to the U.S. as children without legal status.   Continue reading “DACA: Trump expected to end ‘Dreamers’ immigration program”

Shocking documents released by real estate developer John Neace detail a secret plan between his company, Neace Ventures, and the City of Charlestown to use eminent domain to bulldoze the homes of Pleasant Ridge residents who refuse to sell to the developer. The documents indicate the city and developer planned to drive down home values in Pleasant Ridge in an effort to make the city’s eminent domain acquisition cost as low as possible.

The documents were obtained by the Institute for Justice as part of its lawsuit challenging the city’s illegal home inspection program. A hearing in the case is set for this Friday, September 1st, at 9 a.m. in Scott County Court.

The Trump administration made false assertions to justify an executive order expanding police forces’ access to military equipment such as tanks and grenade launchers.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced on Monday that President Trump would make defensive gear available to police again by undoing a policy from the Obama administration. Trump then signed an executive order whose title emphasized that branding: “Restoring State, Tribal, and Local Law Enforcement’s Access to Life-Saving Equipment and Resources.”   Continue reading “How Jeff Sessions Misrepresented the Trump Administration’s Expansion of Military Supplies for Police”

This weekend, North Korea conducted their most powerful nuclear test ever, with what was believed to be a hydrogen bomb in the northern part of their country. The explosion was so massive that it triggered a man-made earthquake measuring 6.3 on the Richter scale. If North Korean sources are to be believed, the bomb tested was a powerful 100 kiloton weapon.

But that’s not all. To take the massive threat to an entirely different level, the North Korean state news also warned that a powerful hydrogen bomb could be detonated at a high altitude to create an electromagnetic pulse (EMP) capable of taking out parts of the American power grid.   Continue reading “What You Need to Know About North Korea’s Hydrogen Bomb and EMP Capabilities”

An eighth Baltimore police officer was arrested on federal racketeering charges on Wednesday in the growing scandal that has engulfed the department’s elite gun task force.

Federal prosecutors allege that the officer, a former leader of the unit, “stole money from victims, some of whom had not committed crimes, swore out false affidavits and submitted false official incident reports.”

He did so, they allege in an indictment, while overseeing and covering for other officers committing similar crimes.

Many people involved in politics swear by the notion that “the ends justify the means,” which is typically the sign of a self-serving actor attempting to justify questionable if not downright evil action in order to get what he or she wants. While pursuit of “the greater good” is often put up for public consumption, the driving force behind this sort of action is almost always personal gain of some sort. This is what most politicians do for a living, which is why they are justifiably hated by the general public.   Continue reading “Antifa is Playing Right Into the Hands of a Burgeoning Police State”
