Posting memes, remixes, and other similar content could soon be banned from the web in the European Union, according to critics who are speaking out against a recently proposed copyright law.

The law, known as the “Copyright Directive,” will be voted on later this month by the European Parliament, and lawmakers suggest that this will protect content creators in the internet age. However, one of the primary reasons why the internet age has brought us so much innovation and novelty is because of the fact that such a large aggregate of people are able to share their ideas and build upon the ideas of others to create something uniquely special.  Continue reading “New Copyright Law Could Make Current and Future Internet Memes Illegal to Share”

It would be difficult to overlook the epidemic of depression that has struck the United States over the past decades. The CDC recently found that death by suicide was up more than 30% and the use of antidepressants has vaulted 65% in the past 15 years.

There are many different theories about this increase. Everything from internet addiction to the Trump presidency to environmental causes has been blamed. Some believe it’s always been like this but that the stigma has lessened and more people are getting help.  Continue reading “200 Ordinary Medications Cause Depression and Suicidal Thoughts: Are YOU Taking One of Them?”

In recent years, Miami-Dade County has been held up as a model for how the criminal justice system should handle people with mental illness or developmental disabilities. Much of that can be attributed to the work of Circuit Judge Steve Leifman, who created a jail diversion program for those with mental illness and developed a framework for “crisis intervention training” to help cops handle calls involving people with mental health issues.

Now, Commissioner Rebeca Sosa wants to take the county’s efforts one step further. This week, she proposed a voluntary registry that would help Miami-Dade police identify residents with disabilities and mental illness.   Continue reading “Miami-Dade Commissioner Wants Database of Mentally Ill Residents So Police Don’t Hurt Them”

New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy responded to Sunday’s deadly shooting at a Trenton arts festival by calling for new controls on guns. But a suspect’s gang membership — and early release from prison after Murphy took office — may have been bigger factors in an incident that left one person dead and 22 wounded.

Meanwhile, Murphy — a first-term Democrat in his first elected office — supports shorter sentences for offenders and cuts in prisoner rehabilitation programs.   Continue reading “NJ governor sees guns, not shooter’s early prison release, as the problem”

An “assault weapons” ban failed to pass a Delaware Senate committee last week but Senate President Pro Tempore David McBride (D-13) says he will bring it to whole Senate for a vote anyway.

The ban failed to pass a five member committee last week after Sen. Greg Lavelle (R-4) voted against it, citing concerns that it violates Delaware’s constitution. The ban broadly targets semi-automatic rifles. That includes AR-15s and related guns, but also goes far beyond them.   Continue reading “‘Assault Weapons’ Ban Fails in Delaware Committee, Senate Leader Bringing Up for Vote Anyway”

A controversial bill that criminalizes filming IDF soldiers has been advanced by an Israeli government committee. The Israeli Attorney General, however, said it would not withstand a constitutional review in its current form.

The Ministerial Committee for Legislation, which determines the coalition government’s position on all pending bills, has green-lighted the legislation, which envisages penalties of up to five years in prison for anyone filming or publishing footage showing Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) with an aim to “harm [soldiers’] spirits.” It is to be debated in the parliament this week. However, Attorney General Avichai Mendelblit said he considers the bill to be “problematic” from a legal point of view, adding that he would not be able to defend it in court.   Continue reading “Nothing to see here!
