NEW YORK (AP) — The U.S. Roman Catholic Church used a special and unprecedented exemption from federal rules to amass at least $1.4 billion in taxpayer-backed coronavirus aid, with many millions going to dioceses that have paid huge settlements or sought bankruptcy protection because of clergy sexual abuse cover-ups.

The church’s haul may have reached — or even exceeded — $3.5 billion, making a global religious institution with more than a billion followers among the biggest winners in the U.S. government’s pandemic relief efforts, an Associated Press analysis of federal data released this week found. A 59-year-old man is accused of pointing a gun at a man in a Walgreens parking lot because he did not wear a mask inside the store amid the coronavirus mask order, Bridgewater Police said on Wednesday.

What we are witnesses to is Rome burning to the ground, no help in sight. The only help that will do any good is for the people to stand and fight, and that isn’t happening. What is happening is the birth of the new normal, something that grows from the cowardice of the people who expect things to change all by itself, without their own hands getting dirty. The number of immigrants caught crossing the southern border illegally surged 40% in June, rebounding from a coronavirus lull that had pushed traffic to its lowest level in years.

The resurgence was chiefly powered by adult migrants from Mexico, who made up nearly 80% of the flow. The number of children and parents — who made up last year’s record surge — remained relatively low, at about 10% of the number.
