WASHINGTON (Sputnik) – Macy’s Inc., a major US department store chain, will be closing 125 of its stores in the next three years, and is cutting 2,000 jobs, the company said in a statement.
“Macy’s plans to close approximately 125 of its least productive stores over the next three years, including approximately 30 stores that are in the process of closure now. These approximately 125 stores currently account for approximately $1.4 billion in annual sales”, the company said on Tuesday.

Another extraordinary article from Ron Unz. It looks like the Soleimani murder is just part of a decades long pattern, as American statecraft blends indistinguishably with Israel’s penchant for the underhanded and bloody.
9/11, the Kennedys, senior American polticians and bureaucrats – they even seriously considered assassinating the elder George Bush in 1991, when he was president! Jaw dropping stuff. Nearly six in ten Americans, or 56 percent, say they are now better off than they were last year, up 50 percent from last year alone.
The data comes from Gallup’s annual Mood of the Nation survey and was conducted January 2-15 following months of historically low unemployment rates and the Dow Jones Industrial Average reaching close to the 30,000 mark for the first time. Even if the U.S. administration decided to leave — or was evicted from — Iraq immediately, the bill of war to the U.S. to date would be an estimated $1,922 billion in current dollars.
This figure includes not only funding appropriated to the Pentagon explicitly for the war, but spending on Iraq by the State Department, the care of Iraq War veterans and interest on debt incurred to fund 16 years of U.S. military involvement in the country. Kirk Douglas, the son of a ragman who channeled a deep, personal anger through a chiseled jaw and steely blue eyes to forge one of the most indelible and indefatigable careers in Hollywood history, died Wednesday in Los Angeles. He was 103.
“It is with tremendous sadness that my brothers and I announce that Kirk Douglas left us today at the age of 103,” son Michael Douglas wrote on his Instagram account. “To the world, he was a legend, an actor from the Golden Age of movies who lived well into his golden years, a humanitarian whose commitment to justice and the causes he believed in set a standard for all of us to aspire to.” Continue reading “Kirk Douglas, Indomitable Icon of Hollywood’s Golden Age, Dies at 103”

Mike Bloomberg’s Super Bowl ad combined two standard elements of contemporary anti-gun rhetoric: emotionalism and falsehoods. As Kyle Smith points out, the fatuous spot was little more than taste signaling: “Vote for me, I hate the same stuff you hate.” And Reason’s Jacob Sullum points out, the ad is predicated on an obvious lie. The deadly new coronavirus continued to spread Tuesday, with more than 24,000 cases and at least 492 deaths confirmed worldwide. The vast majority of the infections, and all but two of the deaths, were in mainland China.
The Pentagon said very early Wednesday that two more chartered flights evacuating about 350 Americans from the virus epicenter in Wuhan, China were scheduled to land in Southern California Wednesday. The first such flight brought 195 Americans to an Air Force Base there last week. Continue reading “Hundreds more Americans evacuated from China as coronavirus death toll rises”

Many years ago, I was giving a lecture on the Constitution and the Bill of Rights to a class at a public high school here in Virginia. During the course of my talk, I made the following statement: “The First Amendment does not give people the right of free speech.”
I asked the students whether my statement was correct or incorrect. Everyone immediately told me that I was wrong. They said the First Amendment did in fact give people the right of free speech. Continue reading “Do We Need the First Amendment?”

A Jewish protester was removed from a Donald Trump campaign rally held in Iowa, after he interrupted the event by accusing the US president of fomenting anti-Semitism.
“I’m an American Jew and ever since your father was elected president, more and more Jews are being gunned down every year,” Elon Glickman, an organizer for the Jewish-American group IfNotNow, shouted during the event Monday night in Des Moines while the president’s oldest son, Donald Trump Jr., was addressing the crowd.
