Two police officers were shot and killed in a southern Mississippi town during a gunfight with a 25-year-old man before dawn on Saturday, officials said.
The officers from Brookhaven, less than 60 miles (100 km) south of Jackson, had gone to a house to respond to a report that shots had been fired, Mississippi Department of Public Safety spokesman Warren Strain said in an email. A $3 billion project to modernize the Hoover Dam and bring it into the 21st century has been announced by the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power.
A new pump station and 20-mile pipeline would be built downstream to regulate flow through electric generators. Water would then be pumped back to the top of the dam, creating electricity and thereby turning the dam into a source of renewable energy. California Governor Jerry Brown signed several gun control bills into law on Friday, including one measure that raises the minimum age for buying rifles and shotguns from 18 to 21.
The new laws come seven months after a gunman opened fire with a semiautomatic assault-style rifle at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, killing 14 students and three adults, the second-deadliest mass shooting at a public school in U.S. history. Yesterday, CIBC reported a “systems issue” that prevented customers from logging in to their accounts online for the entire business day. CIBC, the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce, is one of the five biggest banks in Canada. Yesterday just happened to be the day that people receiving welfare, unemployment benefits, social insurance payments (like American social security), Canada Pension payments, and disability payments landed in the accounts of recipients. ORANGE, Calif. (KABC) — An Orange County judge on Thursday ruled that SB54, California’s so-called “sanctuary state” law, is unconstitutional.

Marty Balin, founder of Jefferson Airplane, longtime member of Jefferson Starship, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, and Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award recipient, has died at age 76. Balin’s publicity company, Jensen Communications, announced Friday that Balin passed away on Sept. 27, with his wife, Susan Joy Balin, by his side.
“Marty and I shared the deepest of love — he often called it Nirvana — and it was. But really, we were all touched by his love. His presence will be within my entire being forever,” Susan Balin said in statement released via Jensen on Friday afternoon. Mark Hazelwood, the former president of Pilot Flying J who headed the company while it allegedly systematically defrauded trucking companies for nearly a decade in diesel purchasing contracts, has been sentenced to 12 and a half years in prison for his role in the alleged scheme. He’s also been ordered to pay a $750,000 fine and serve three years of probation after his release from prison.

Israel will extend its sovereignty over the entire area between the Jordan River and the Mediterranean Sea, Member of the Knesset Moti Yogev said yesterday.
The official from the Jewish Home party added:
There had been no Palestinian state and there will never be a Palestinian state. Israel will remain Jewish.
