More than 400 Ukrainian troops have been allowed to cross into Russia after requesting sanctuary. It’s the largest, but not the first, case of desertion into Russia by Ukrainian soldiers involved in Kiev’s military crackdown in the east of the country.

The Phillipines has reported the country’s first suspected cases of the Ebola virus. According to the country’s health officials, seven workers who returned to the Phillipines from Sierra Leone are showing symptoms symilar to that of the tropical virus.

There are currently over 1,300 suspected cases worldwide. The World Health Organization says there is little risk of the virus spreading outside of West Africa, but countries outside of the affected region are still taking precautions to prevent a spread.   Continue reading “Phillippines reports possible Ebola cases”

PICO RIVERA, Calif. (AP) — A Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy accidentally shot and killed a man during a gunfight with a wanted parolee who invaded the man’s house and took his wife hostage, authorities said Saturday.

The deputy mistook Frank Mendoza, 54, for the parolee during an 8-hour standoff that ended with SWAT officers storming his home in the suburb of Pico Rivera to rescue his wife and kill the suspect, said William McSweeney, chief of the sheriff’s detective division.   Continue reading “Police kill bystander in California standoff”
