A family in Georgia said this week that a police officer should never have killed 17-year-old Christopher Roupe because he was only holding a video game controller, not a gun as authorities have claimed.
According to WSB-TV, Roupe had been shot to death on Friday when Euharlee officers showed up at his home to serve a probation violation warrant on his father. The officer later told state investigators that she was forced to shoot because Roupe had pointed at gun at her when he opened the door. Many people believe that they can “beat the case” if the officer doesn’t read them their Miranda rights during an arrest. This is a myth.
The only time an officer must read a person his or her Miranda rights is when: (1) the person has been placed under arrest, AND (2) the officer is about to question the person about a crime. For example, if you’re placed under arrest after consenting to a search request and confessing to ownership of found contraband, police do not need to read you your rights unless they want to question you about an unrelated crime. Known as Rabbit Island, Okunoshima was used as the secret base for the Japanese Imperial Army’s lethal gas operation during World War Two From 1929 to 1945, more than 6,000 tons of poison gas were manufactured on the remote island, and the program was shrouded in secrecy. For 16 years, Okunoshima was left off maps, and workers who produced the five types of poison gas – which were mostly used in warfare in China – were told to keep the factories a secret.
