The Death of Gun Control?
One year ago, the folks of Defense Distributed reached a landmark settlement with the US Department of State, allowing the group to freely publish files pertaining to arms manufacture without violating ITAR. The age of the downloadable gun had formally begun, but dark figures loomed over the horizon. Within a week of DefDist publishing their files under license from the Department of State, DefDist was sued by over 20 states, and a federal judge from the Western District of Washington forced the company to pull their files from their online repository DEFCAD. What began on the coasts, in areas like New York and San Francisco, is now radiating into the nation’s heartland, as well as to cities from Las Vegas to Charleston, South Carolina. Entry-level buyers are scrambling to purchase homes that are in short supply, sending values soaring. Continue reading “America’s Housing Affordability Crisis Spreads to the Heartland”
Chinese media is working overtime to paint the Hong Kong protest movement as a gang of violent radicals driven mad by Western propaganda. The latest round of editorial broadsides was fired over charges brought against four protesters for carrying “offensive weapons” to Saturday’s protest at the Yuen Long train station.
Yuen Long was the site of an attack by pro-Chinese forces against protesters, bystanders, and reporters the previous weekend. The white-clad mob most certainly was armed with offensive weapons, ranging from bamboo poles to metal rods, and they were employed with gusto, sending dozens of people to the hospital. New York is extending the waiting period to buy guns from three days to 30 days to allow more time for background checks under a law approved Monday by Gov. Andrew Cuomo.
The pro-gun safety law is a response to a rash of shootings across the nation.
The bill originally passed both legislative houses in January. Continue reading “Cuomo approves extending background checks for gun purchases”
The 19-year-old gunman who killed three people and injured 11 others at the Gilroy Garlic Festival could not have purchased the AK-47-style rifle used in the shooting in California, exposing the limits of the current patchwork of gun laws in the US.
Like thousands of others every year, the gun used in Sunday’s crimes came from a neighboring state with less oversight over who can buy a firearm. Gunman Santino William Legan had recently been living in Nevada, and authorities said Monday he legally purchased the WASR-10 rifle there. Getting the gun to California was then as easy as driving across the border.
