CHICAGO (AP) — A U.S. appeals court Thursday upheld an assault weapons ban that covers Chicago and the rest of Cook County, Illinois, saying guns rights advocates provided no compelling reason why it should diverge from a previous ruling upholding a similar ban in a Chicago suburb.
The 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals rejected arguments from gun rights lawyers that the ban passed by the Cook County Board of Commissioners should be assessed differently than the ban in the suburb of Highland Park because crime is worse in Cook County, where residents might conclude they required more firepower to defend themselves. Four years ago, I wrote an article about how I acquired my Jewish identity. After the Tablet piece got published, I was lucky: My parents, friends, and partners — some halakhic Jews among them — accepted me as a Jew. Thanks to their acceptance, I was able to negotiate and construct my Jewishness in public spaces without having to turn to synagogues, rabbinates, or the State of Israel for approval. Today, while living in the Diaspora and not being a member of any congregation, I feel Jewish, know a little bit of Hebrew, celebrate holidays through the lens of their secular interpretation, and consider the Jewish culture to be part of my heritage. Walmart is outsourcing 569 finance and accounting jobs in North Carolina to Indian contract workers, spotlighting the expansion of the H-1B program from software jobs to accounting, healthcare, and design.

Gunfire has erupted over southern Lebanon amid soaring tensions after Lebanon accused Israel of launching aggression tantamount to “a declaration of war” – in the words of President Michel Aoun, in reference to the twin Israeli drone attack on Hezbollah offices in south Beirut the past weekend.

24-year-old Eliyas Aregahegne, of Northwest D.C., was arrested after reportedly stabbing Margery Magill in Washington DC while she was out walking her dog. Magill was working as a dog walker at the time.

Baltimore Police say the man suspected of trying to run over an officer and shooting at another this week is dead after he was shot by police around 11 p.m. Wednesday during an exchange that left an officer and a woman injured.
Police Commissioner Michael Harrison said in a media briefing at 1:30 a.m. Thursday that the suspect was pronounced dead at the hospital after he was struck by gunfire by responding officers.
The US Government’s Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) has asked the public to help them find an underground facility “able to host research & experimentation” by Friday.
“Attention, city dwellers! We’re interested in identifying university-owned or commercially managed underground urban tunnels & facilities able to host research & experimentation,” the agency tweeted on Wednesday. Lake Charles, LA — In May of 2017, then-Lake Charles Police Officer Robert Hammac initiated a traffic stop that would end with him savagely beating an unarmed and surrendering man in a fit of rage. After the incident Hammac was allowed to resign and thought he got away with it. However, earlier this year, he was finally indicted. He pleaded guilty to the charges earlier this month and now faces up to 10 years in prison.
