Elon MuskExaminer – by Mark Whittington

A Thursday story in the International Business Times suggeststhat the main beneficiary of the Russian rocket engine embargo against the United States may be Elon Musk’s SpaceX. SpaceX, an entrepreneurial space launch company has been keen to penetrate that defense space satellite market for quite some time. The company is already a major NASA contractor with its Dragon cargo ship and has launched a number of commercial satellites.

As the Washington Post notes, SpaceX is conducting a law suit with the federal government over a contract for 36 military launches that has been granted to United Launch Alliance, the company’s main competitor. SpaceX is involved with a lengthy certification process with the Department of Defense that would allow it to compete for military contracts. It would like the military to cancel the ULA contract and put it out to competitive bid once SpaceX gets the certification.   Continue reading “Russian rocket engine embargo could benefit Elon Musk’s SpaceX”

Anger has swept Turkey as the extent of the disaster became clear, with protests aimed at mine owners accused of ignoring safety for profit, and at Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan’s government, seen as too cozy with industry tycoons and insensitive in its reaction to the tragedy.

International outrage is mounting over the death sentence a Sudanese judge ordered for the pregnant wife of an American citizen — all because she refuses to renounce her Christian faith.

Meriam Ibrahim, 26, was sentenced Thursday after being convicted of apostasy. The court in Khartoum ruled that Ibrahim must give birth and nurse her baby before being executed, but must receive 100 lashes immediately after having her baby for adultery — for having relations with her Christian husband. Ibrahim, a physician and the daughter of a Christian mother and a Muslim father who abandoned the family as a child, could have spared herself death by hanging simply by renouncing her faith.    Continue reading “International outrage grows for Sudanese woman sentenced to death for apostasy”

Lara Russo with the cash found stashed in the couchReese Werkhoven with the cash found stashed in the couch. The Little Rebellion – by Hobie Ramin

It was an ethical dilemma straight from the textbooks: Imagine you and two of your friends find a small fortune of cash inside a crummy old couch you bought for cheap at a second-hand shop.  Would you trace the money back to its owner, or would you keep it to spend on your heart’s deepest desires? A SUNY New Paltz student and two friends dealt with this dilemma first hand early March 2014.

Third-year geology student Reese Werkhoven, Mount Holyoke College graduate Cally Guasti and SUNY New Paltz graduate Lara Russo were getting cozy on their new couch for the first time, when Werkhoven ruffled himself a plastic envelope from under the couch’s patchy arm.
