TOPANGA, Calif., March 27 (UPI) — A musical mystery is unfolding in California’s Santa Monica Mountains as a piano appeared without explanation at a lookout point 2 miles from the nearest road.

Hikers and news helicopters captured images and video Thursday showing the piano, estimated to weigh at least 300 to 400 pounds, that was apparently placed late Wednesday or early Thursday at the Topanga Lookout, which is accessible by a 2-mile hike from the nearest road.   Continue reading “Piano mysteriously appears in Santa Monica Mountains”

DAMASCUS, Syria, March 27 (UPI) — Syrian President Bashar al-Assad gave two recent interviews in which he discussed his relationship with U.S. officials, in one saying he would be “open” to dialogue and in another dismissing the United States as “colonialist” and “warmongers.”

BOSTON, March 27 (UPI) — A Boston woman who said she was injured as a result of the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing was indicted on charges she stole money from a fund for victims.

Joanna Leigh, 41, said she suffered a traumatic brain injury as a result of the explosions that killed three and injured 260. She denies the allegations she stole from One Fund Boston, established in the wake of the bombing to financially support victims. South Africa's Pelindaba Nuclear Research Center stores nearly a quarter ton of uraniumiHLS

According to various reports, back in 1990, the South African government at the time extracted the country’s inventory of highly enriched uranium from its nuclear weapons, then melted the fuel before storing it in a silver vault at the Pelindaba nuclear research center. The Pelindaba center is located just thirty minutes away from Pretoria, the country’s administrative capital.

A San Jose, California, police officer was fatally shot Tuesday night by a man threatening to kill himself, officials said, adding that the suspect was later found dead inside his home.

The fatal shooting of a Wisconsin State Patrol trooper during an exchange of gunfire that also killed a bank robbery suspect came at the end of a series of bank robberies and carjackings that left a motorist dead, WBAY-TV in Green Bay reported late Tuesday.

The crime rampage began in the Village of Wausaukee and ended in Fond du Lac, where the trooper was killed, according to a post on the station’s website.

According to Fond du Lac Police Chief William Lamb, the trooper was following the suspect’s vehicle about 5:30 p.m. Tuesday when the exchange of gunfire occurred in the 100 block of N. Berger Parkway.

A Pennsylvania police officer was charged Tuesday with criminal homicide after investigators concluded she shot an unarmed motorist in the back as he lay facedown after a traffic stop over an expired inspection sticker.

Authorities accused Hummelstown police Officer Lisa J. Mearkle of shooting 59-year-old David Kassick twice Feb. 2 without legal justification. She was released on $250,000 bail, her lawyer said. MOSCOW, March 24 (UPI) — Russia increased tension over NATO nuclear missiles Tuesday with a demand that the United States remove all non-strategic nuclear weapons from Europe.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Lukashevich referred to comments by Jen Psaki, his counterpart at the U.S. State Department, that U.S. missiles are under constant U.S. control, as distorted. The subject of a 24-hour manhunt in Racine County is dead, after police say he fatally shot himself after being cornered in an area of pine trees in Mount Pleasant Monday afternoon.

Officers had been searching for 24-year-old Stantavious Sillas since Sunday, after he allegedly kidnapped a female employee from a rural hospital and rehab facility near Rochester. He later shot at a deputy who spotted him at a grocery store parking lot in Union Grove, hitting a squad car. LAKE BAIKAL, Russia, March 22 (UPI) — The son of former Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych died in Russia on Saturday, the latest in a series of people close to the former pro-Russian leader who have been killed in vehicle accidents or suicides.
