PHOENIX (AP) — If Christian Avila lived a few hundred miles to the west, he would have a driver’s license and qualify for in-state college tuition and a host of other opportunities available to young people granted legal status by President Barack Obama two years ago.
But Avila lives in Phoenix, and the 24-year-old immigrant who was brought here from Mexico by his parents at age 9 still has to navigate the sprawling city in fear as he drives to school or work. Continue reading “Immigrants’ chances tied to their state’s policies”
The day after Thanksgiving, most people’s refrigerators are so full with leftovers that getting to door shut requires the family engineer to play Tupperware Jenga with all of the containers of food. Inevitably, in many households, much of the leftovers go to waste after the 10th turkey sandwich in a row. In this economy, none of us can afford to let anything go to waste, however. There’s a lot more you can do with those leftovers besides referring to your book of 101 Ways to Make a Turkey Sandwich. The preserving goes way past turkey – there are lots of tasty ways to preserve your other leftovers too. Continue reading “Pad Your Pantry: How to Preserve Your Thanksgiving Leftovers”
Russia’s Northern Fleet has been conducting naval training near Dover. Two battleships and two supply vessels worked on operations and communications in conditions of adverse weather and heavy marine traffic.
“Today a squadron of warships and support vessels of the Northern Fleet headed by a large anti-submarine ship, the Severomorsk, crossed the narrowest part of the English Channel and passed into the Bay of the Seine,” said Russia’s defense ministry. Muslim countries are able to solve their problems on their own, the Turkish president believes. He says far from offering help, the West is actually exploiting “conflicts in the Middle East” and only cares about the region’s riches.
Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has urged Islamic countries to unite in order to solve “the biggest humanitarian and political crisis in their history,” according to AFP, citing the Turkish president’s speech in Istanbul on Thursday. NASSAU, Bahamas (AP) — On the first day new immigration rules took effect this month in the Bahamas, officers in green fatigues swept through poor sections of the capital filling two yellow school buses with dozens of people who couldn’t document their right to be in the island chain.
The government, amid fierce criticism of the raid, later insisted the timing of the operation was coincidence. Still, the message of the surprise morning raid, in which the officers were accompanied by local media, couldn’t be clearer: The Bahamas aims to become less hospitable to its swelling population of migrants lacking legal status. An 8 year-old Long Island girl has been kicked out of school, and the reason is outrageous.
Ceili McNicholas was told not to return to Long Island’s Laddie A. Decker Sound Beach School after her mother Jamie refused to let her receive the T-Dap booster, which protects against tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis.
The decision to skip the booster wasn’t solely Jamie’s idea – her daughter’s pediatrician won’t administer the shot because it is labeled for children ages 10 and over. Ceili is only 8. Continue reading “School Expels Child Over Vaccine That Even the Doctor Refuses to Give”
Advisers for the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) will meet next week to decide whether gay men should be allowed to donate blood, the agency’s biggest step yet toward changing the 30-year-old prohibition.
If the FDA accepts the recommendation from its advisory board, it would roll back a policy that has faced mounting criticism from LGBT advocates and some members of Congress for more than four years. Continue reading “FDA weighs lifting ban on blood donations from gay men”
There’s no dangerous dogs any more than there’s dangerous guns, it all depends on the human handling either one.
Emilio Muñoz lives in Huiliches, a lightly populated district in the province of Neuquen, Argentina. Because of the crime problem that affects the entire country, Muñoz bought two Rottweilers as a guard dogs. Mister Muñoz suffered seven robbery attempts in four and a half years. His male Rottweiler called Otto did the job it was supposed to, defending the house, even killing two robbers during break in attempts, one in 2011 and another one in 2012. Black Friday is also one of the biggest days of the year for gun sales. That puts pressure on the system for background checks.
Researchers with the National Instant Criminal Background Check System, which is overseen by the FBI, have until the end of the third business day following an attempted firearm purchase to determine whether a buyer is eligible. After that, buyers have the right to get their guns even if the check wasn’t completed. Continue reading “Sales Bang: Black Friday Biggest Day for Gun Sales”
Sacramento Bee: When the new Legislature is sworn in on Monday, Sen. Ricardo Lara says he plans to introduce legislation that would create an Office of New Americans to help undocumented immigrants illegal aliens by connecting them to legal services, English classes and help applying for relief under the executive actions announced last week by President Barack Obama.
Obama’s plan is expected to affect at least 1.5 million undocumented immigrants illegal aliens in California, and many have questions about how to file paperwork to be considered for relief, said a statement from Lara, a Bell Gardens Democrat who chairs the Legislature’s Latino Caucus. Farriers are some of the most fiercely independent, hard working, self governing people on the planet.
Trying to get them to agree on just about anything is akin to herding cats.

Washington (AFP) – The Missouri police officer who killed an unarmed black teen sparking months of protests in the city of Ferguson will never return to policing, his lawyer said.
Darren Wilson is currently in discussions with the Ferguson, Missouri police department on the terms and conditions of his departure, attorney Neil Bruntrager said this week.

First off, what is a holiday? A holiday is a day of rest. It is a time to observe something special or even spiritual. A time to be with your family and share quality time with those you love and care about. A time to stop and reflect on life and be thankful for what you have and who you can share it with. A time to even celebrate something of historical significance in your country.
So it’s no mistake that the elites want to take all of that away and erase any remnants of it.
What are holidays today? Nothing more than Fascist corporations creating propaganda and ridiculous marketing ploys, while making people work under slave labor conditions, in order to increase their corporate profits. In doing so, they have the customers who are barely able to pay their bills, spend money on things they don’t need and argue and fight with the slave labor workers if they can’t get what they want, instead of with the CEOs who created the situational problem in the first place. It’s not just our nation’s legislators that enjoy a “revolving door” — one that moves them from Congress to the private sector and back again, to the mutual benefit of legislators and certain industries… not so much the rest of America.
There’s another revolving door out there — one that keeps bad cops employed in the law enforcement sector. It’s incredibly difficult for police departments to shed their “bad apples,” what with police unions pushing back hard on the few occasions that the blue line fails to hold. But even if they do manage to cut one loose, there’s a good chance this former officer will just end up carrying a badge and gun for someone else.
