Under FOIA, there are three categories of requesters: media, which has the lowest level of fees; all others, which are assessed a moderate levels of fees for covering search and duplication costs; and commercial, which has high fees to cover legal review. A Coast Guard lawyer has ruled that, because MuckRock has readers, it’s commercial, not media. On its official website, the United Nations Office for Disarmament Affairs (yes, that’s really a thing and yes, it is housed right here in the United States) announced that the UN’s Arms Trade Treaty (ATT) “will enter into force on 24 December 2014.”
BEIJING – Putting a bright face on the future of U.S. ties to China, President Barack Obama announced Monday that the two countries would start granting visas to each other’s citizens valid for up to a decade. Yet thorny issues like human rights and trade lurked just under the surface, reflecting the tough road ahead for the two economic powers as Obama began a weeklong trip to the region.
Obama, addressing Asian business leaders at a high-level summit, sought to dispel the notion that America’s interest in Asia should be a cause for concern for China’s leaders. Beijing has viewed Obama’s engagement here with trepidation, suspecting the U.S. wants to limit China’s rise, but Obama insisted that “one country’s prosperity doesn’t have to come at the expense of the other.” Continue reading “US, China agree to expand validity of business, tourist visas to 10 years”
A bird enthusiast made a 25-mile trip to see a falconry display at a family leisure park only to be told that single adults are banned – for fear of paedophiles.
Married man Matthew Richards, 54, a father of three grown-up children, was staggered by the rule at award-winning Puxton Park, a family-orientated leisure attraction near Weston-super-Mare.
We have heard the resounding voices of our patron saints from the Right lately that depart from the usual message of common sense and advocacy of Liberty. They have become the ‘new jingoist’, defender of the State and ‘revenging angel’. You know of who they are: David Horowitz, Bill O’Reilly and Rush Limbaugh. They all claim to be Conservative. But what does that really mean, especially in today’s crisis environment?
We here at GGP are proud to officially announce the release of the Specter Series, the first rifles from Grey Ghost Precision. The Specter rifle series begins with a Heavy (.308) and Light (5.56). Gregor sent us this nifty photo of his new PGM 338 chambered in (you guessed it) .338 Lapua Magnum. He has fitted it out with a S&B 5-20 Ultra Short scope, Era-Tac QD mount and a Harris Bipod. It is one handsome rifle in my opinion. The PGM 338 is made by PGM Précision in France and is in service in Israel, Singapore and Slovenia. Continue reading “PGM 338”
New York federal prosecutor Loretta Lynch, the new nominee for attorney general, has a career filled with high profile cases — and she was a member of Bill Clinton’s defense team during the 1992 Whitewater corruption probe.
As he made his announcement Saturday afternoon, Obama called the two-time U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of New York a “tough, fair and independent” lawyer.
The credit card industry got a huge boost from President Obama last month when he signed an executive order requiring a switch to chip-and-pin technology for government vendors and agencies.
It dictates the Department of the Treasury “take necessary steps” to guarantee payment terminals authorized by the agency have “enhanced security features” by January 2015. It would require a complete upgrade of all credit card machines approved by the Department of Treasury, a cost borne by government agencies instead of credit card firms. The war in Afghanistan may be coming to a close, but the commanding general of the 3rd Infantry Division is calling on his soldiers to stay focused as they prepare to deploy.
“There is still a mission in Afghanistan,” said Maj. Gen. Mike Murray. “The mission is not to get equipment and people out of theater. That has to happen to meet the presidential guidance. It’s maintaining the right mindset for my staff, in balancing the requirements of the [Train, Advise and Assist Commands] and the advisers and the Security Force Assistance Brigades.” Continue reading “3rd ID commander readies his troops for Afghanistan”
Some 1,500 more U.S. troops are heading to Iraq but not into direct combat with Islamic State militants, President Barack Obama, who spoke about Iraq, Iran, immigration and the Democratic losses in Congress, said Sunday on CBS “Face the Nation.” The additional troops double the current U.S. presence in Iraq to slightly more than 3,000 soldiers.
“Phase 1 was getting an Iraqi government that is inclusive and credible,” Obama said. “We now have done that. So now what we’ve done, rather than just halt ISIL’s [the Islamic State also referred to as ISIS] momentum, we’re now in a position to go on some offense. Airstrikes have been very effective in degrading ISIL’s capabilities and halting ISIL’s advance. Now what we need is ground troops, Iraqi ground troops to push them back. … Our troops are not engaged in combat.” Continue reading “President Obama On ‘Face The Nation’: 1,500 Additional U.S. Troops In Iraq Will Not Be In Combat”
