If your body were a house, protein would be the nails and screws that hold it together.

And when a crisis hits your “house,” you need to weather the storm. The protein that keeps everything running smoothly today needs to be constantly replenished so your house will stand tomorrow.

Your body is constantly burning energy. Protein triggers the chemical reactions needed to keep your metabolism running smoothly. You need protein to properly support your body and protect it against viruses. You also need it to help regulate your insulin level.   Continue reading “Why Protein Is Important In Your Diet”

Any intelligent fool can make things bigger, more complex, and more violent. It takes a touch of genius–and a lot of courage–to move in the opposite direction.”

When I moved to Seattle in 1996, I had thought I knew how to order a cup of coffee: “I’ll have a cup of coffee please.” Soon I realized that it was more complicated: “I’ll have a Venti soy dolce latte, topped with sprinkled cinnamon and caramel drawing on whip cream, with coffee on the side please.” Referring to the US government is increasingly becoming as challenging as ordering coffee in Seattle: “Petro-imperial, coal-fired, plutocratic, oligarchic, inverted totalitarian, fascist, propagandist Big Brother, with democracy on the side.” Things are beginning to simplify though. Soon you’ll be able to refer to the US government with one single word–the Borg.   Continue reading “The US Government Is Metamorphosing Into the Borg”

The California Obamacare exchange sent incorrect tax forms to 100,000 different households that accepted federal premium subsidies for health insurance during the health care law’s first year.

Covered California, the state exchange with the largest number of customers in the country, said Friday that some of its tax forms were incorrect because the exchange’s customer information didn’t match data from health insurers, the Los Angeles Times reports.   Continue reading “California Obamacare Exchange Sent Faulty Tax Forms To 100,000”

The cost of educating the tens of thousands of Unaccompanied Alien Children (UAC) who poured across our borders in the spring and summer of 2014 is having a continued effect on the cost — and quality — of public education. A new report from the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR), which campaigns for an end to illegal immigration, focuses on the negative effects the greatly increased number of students enrolled in English proficiency classes is having on seven school districts in the Washington, D.C., metro area.   Continue reading “Cost of Illegal Immigrant Students Hits School Budgets”

President Obama has repeatedly said that U.S. troops would not be sent into harm’s way to fight ISIS and those who are in the region are there to only provide training and advisory support.

But what would happen if Islamic State militants were to directly attack a military base housing several hundred American troops?

Would that be justification enough to put American boots on the ground?   Continue reading “BREACH: Over 300 U.S. Marines Under Siege, Prepare To Defend Against Islamic States Attackers In Iraq”

We are exposed daily to sexual images, innuendos, and conversations in our society. Whether we see them on TV, they come from people passing us on the street or even from our own family — it’s inevitable and we can’t avoid it.

As someone in my early twenties, I admit that I was thrust into this sexually driven culture more rapidly when I began college. I attended a Christian university, but even a controlled environment like that was still subject to subliminal images and messages.   Continue reading “Sex and Relationships: Is love part of the equation anymore?”

Bloomberg – by Emily Greenhouse

On Friday afternoon, Gov. John Kitzhaber of Oregon resigned, and the Oregon secretary of state Kate Brown, also a Democrat, became the state governor. In an instant, Oregon had the first openly bisexual governor in American history.

For many of Gov. Brown’s constituents, this may mean little, because she is married to a man, and has been for many years. The adjective becomes easy to explain away, then; bisexuality is often dismissed as something made up, a risqué adolescent antic, something college girls do to impress boys. Last January, Lisa Diamond, a scholar of sexual orientation, told the reporter Michael Schulman that many people feel bisexuality “is a transitional stage or a form of being in the closet,” but that in fact it’s more common than strictly same-sex attraction.    Continue reading “Does It Matter That Oregon’s New Governor Is Bisexual?”

A new genetically modified apple that doesn’t brown when cut open or bruised finally has been cleared to be grown in the U.S.

An arm of the U.S. Department of Agriculture said Friday — after a three-year wait — that the Okanagan Specialty Fruit’s Arctic Apple in Golden and Granny varieties doesn’t pose any harm to other plants or pests. The apple won’t be at grocery stores yet, though this was its last major regulatory hurdle. The company is still waiting on the conclusion of a voluntary review by the FDA before the apple can enter the market place.   Continue reading “Feds approve GMO apple”
