The Trump administration’s top public health official bought shares in a tobacco company one month into her leadership of the agency charged with reducing tobacco use — the leading cause of preventable disease and death and an issue she had long championed.

The stock was one of about a dozen new investments that Brenda Fitzgerald, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, made after she took over the agency’s top job, according to documents obtained by POLITICO. A Colorado physical education teacher has been placed on paid administrative leave after allegedly assaulting a student who refused to stand for the Pledge of Allegiance.

Karen Smith, the PE teacher at Angevine Middle School in Lafayette, was placed on leave following the alleged incident on Thursday, CBS Local reports.

I’m pretty sure the nation’s favorite groundhog, Punxsutawney Phil, knows more about the weather than he does about markets, and I’m not all that sure he knows anything about the weather! In fact, I don’t understand the underground methods of this rodent resident of Gobbler’s Knob at all. It would seem to me that sighting his shadow should indicate a nice sunny day, which in turn should indicate spring is just around the corner. How can he scowl and crawl back into his hole on a day filled with sunshine? The Israeli Foreign Ministry has postponed a visit by a Polish security official. The move comes amid a row between Tel Aviv and Warsaw over a bill that criminalizes blaming Poles for Nazi crimes committed on Polish soil.

Israel asked to suspend the planned visit by the head of the Polish National Security Council, the Israeli Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Thursday. The Polish official, Pawel Soloch, was scheduled to head to Israel on February 4, and among other things visit the Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial.
