Traveling from Shanghai to San Francisco in under two hours may sound like a fantasy, but China believes it’s figured out how to design an underwater vehicle that can make the idea a reality.
The Pentagon was forced to terminate the testing of a hypersonic weapon on Monday only moments after liftoff, creating a setback for a program that the military hopes will someday allow for any target on Earth to be obliterated in under an hour.
Monday morning’s launch of a rocket carrying the Advanced Hypersonic Weapon from a test range in Alaska marked the second time since 2011 that the United States Army has attempted to deploy a missile capable of reaching speeds of Mach 5 or higher — or 3,600 miles-per-hour at a minimum — which, if all goes as planned, “will allow the Department of Defense to engage any target anywhere in the world in less than an hour,” DOD spokesperson Maureen Schumann told the Associated Press. Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) wrote in a letter to President Barack Obama on Tuesday that he is “increasingly alarmed” at the president’s plans for an executive action that would grant amnesty to upwards of 5 to 6 million illegal aliens.
Rubio begins his letter to Obama by noting how he had, last year, joined the Senate’s “Gang of Eight” but has since learned that such a comprehensive pathway forward on immigration is not possible due to Americans’ deep distrust of the federal government when it comes to immigration and other matters. California is seeking funding for a statewide earthquake early-warning system to give residents some prior notice in the case of future temblors. The effort has new urgency following the magnitude-6.0 quake in Napa Valley on Sunday.
Islamic State militants are holding a third American hostage, a 26-year-old humanitarian worker kidnapped last year in Syria. The jihadist group is demanding a ransom of $6.6 million and the release of a Muslim woman from a US prison.
The kidnapped woman, whose family asked not to be identified, is the third of at least four Americans known to be held by Islamic State (IS, also known as ISIS), currently terrorizing large swaths of northern and western Iraq after years fighting in Syria’s civil war. RENO, Nev. (AP) — Hundreds of travelers on the road to Burning Man in their quest for oneness with nature and celebration of self-expression on a peaceful playa in northern Nevada’s desert didn’t expect to spend their first night in the parking lot of a Wal-Mart or Reno resort casino.
But most were taking it in stride and were largely optimistic — as so-called “Burners” are apt to be — that the gates to the counterculture event would reopen Tuesday after rare rain showers in the Black Rock Desert turned the ancient lake bottom to a muddy quagmire the day before. The dictionary defines a hero as “a man of distinguished courage or ability, admired for his brave deeds and noble qualities.” A hero shows acceptance and fairness. He doesn’t judge. He’s loyal, forgiving, loving, and honest. He’s someone who will stand with you when things are bad and celebrate your accomplishments when things are good.
It takes these combined qualities to fully define a hero. Trouble is, it’s hard to find a human who can claim them all. Sure, we occasionally see news headlines of someone who has gone above and beyond, but maybe it’s time to look at our feet—to the four paws sitting next to us. While few humans possess every quality of a hero, it is the very nature of a dog to exhibit them all. Continue reading “National Dog Day: How Sadie saved Michael’s life”
School cafeteria workers, already frustrated that kids don’t like menus ordered by Michelle Obama and the Agriculture Department, slapped as “offensive” the first lady’s latest criticism that some school districts have given up and are just lazily serving junk food.
Well, look at that. The Justice Department has confirmed to the conservative watchdog group Judicial Watch that the emails of several IRS officials, including those of Lois Lerner, still exist, despite claims that they’d been lost due to hard drive crashes and destroyed backup tapes:
They hope that it’s ready for 2017, or the 100th anniversary of The Bolshevik Revolution that started communism. This is from James Kirchick:
“The museum would include witness testimony, artifacts, and interactive exhibits registering the toll communism has wrought in some 40 countries throughout history.
Such an institution would join the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in teaching future generations about man’s capacity for inhumanity. “
Earlier this week we published a link to an online database where you can look to see what kind of military equipment your local county is stockpiling. Several other publications have linked to this database as well. I heard from a couple of people that it might not be a 100% comprehensive list, but others are discovering that, whether it is comprehensive or not, there is a lot to be learned from looking in that database.
