NEW YORK (Reuters) – A New York woman who said she was sexually assaulted by Jeffrey Epstein at the age of 14 sued the disgraced financier’s estate and a former associate on Wednesday, in the start of an expected wave of lawsuits.

Jennifer Araoz, 32, said in her complaint that she was starting out in high school when an Epstein associate brought her to the financier’s massive mansion on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, beginning a grooming process that led to months of sexual abuse, including what she called a “brutal rape.”  Continue reading “Jeffrey Epstein sex abuse accuser files first in wave of lawsuits”

Portland, Ore., is gearing up for a set of dueling rallies this weekend that is expected to bring an informal coalition of right-wing groups– some of which have been decried as white nationalists and white supremacists– and so-called anti-fascists, who have violently opposed these right-wing demonstrators.

Portland’s so-called “Antifa” members have issued an online call to followers to turn out to “defend Portland from a far-Right attack.”  Continue reading “FBI to assist in Portland as city braces for dueling Antifa, right-wing protests”

Tower Hamlets council in London last month prevented a bike ride raising awareness of the plight of the Palestinian people from using space in one of its parks. We now know that the council feared that this advocacy for Palestine would violate the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance’s working definition of antisemitism (UK council refused to host Palestinian event over antisemitism fears, 3 August). This use of the IHRA definition demonstrates the real threat to freedom of expression that it represents, ignoring its protection in our national rights legislation.  Continue reading “Freedom of expression on Palestine is being suppressed”

“It is often the case that police shootings, incidents where law enforcement officers pull the trigger on civilians, are left out of the conversation on gun violence. But a police officer shooting a civilian counts as gun violence. Every time an officer uses a gun against an innocent or an unarmed person contributes to the culture of gun violence in this country.” – Journalist Celisa Calacal

Morgellons disease is a bizarre condition in which sufferers say that, along with a number of other unpleasant symptoms, alien fibers of various colors emerge from their skin. The term Morgellons was coined by a woman named Mary Leitao, whose son contracted a strange lesion on his lip. He would point at the lesion and say “bugs.” Leitao took him to numerous doctors who dismissed the condition with various explanations ranging from eczema to unknown dermatitis. Leitao began researching the symptoms and found an account from the 1600s in which a British physician described “harsh hairs” emerging from the backs of children. Plastic was the furthest thing from Gregory Wetherbee’s mind when he began analyzing rainwater samples collected from the Rocky Mountains. “I guess I expected to see mostly soil and mineral particles,” said the US Geological Survey researcher. Instead, he found multicolored microscopic plastic fibers.

The discovery, published in a recent study (pdf) titled “It is raining plastic”, raises new questions about the amount of plastic waste permeating the air, water, and soil virtually everywhere on Earth.  Continue reading “It’s raining plastic: microscopic fibers fall from the sky in Rocky Mountains”

Donald Trump cast doubt on Tuesday over former President Bill Clinton’s denial that he ever visited Jeffrey Epstein’s notorious ‘pedophilia island.’

The president repeatedly suggested that his predecessor was lying in a statement saying that he had not been to Little St. James, the island owned by the pervert financier, which was raided by the FBI Monday.    Continue reading “Donald Trump casts doubt on Bill Clinton’s denial that he went to ‘Pedophile Island’”
