Last week, the Texas Republican Party Convention featured plenty of controversial issues. The platform pushed the party’s immigration plank further right and endorsed ex-gay therapy for men and women “seeking escape from the homosexual lifestyle.” Most of these issues garnered widespread support from convention delegates, but none was as confusing and seemingly contradictory as gun rights. Detroit— Gun rights activists hosted an open-carry picnic Saturday at Milliken State Park along the riverfront to stress the importance of carrying firearms for self-defense.

“It’s just like any other picnic. The only thing that separates us is that the vast majority of us are open carrying our firearms,” said Patrick Dunbar, the southeast regional coordinator for Michigan Open Carry. As I climbed the steep stairs to the Yamatsumi shinto shrine from the entrance gateway at the bottom of the mountain, the view over the beautiful Iitate village surrounded by the rich nature appeared in front of me. There was once a rumor, based on a TV program, that Yamatzumi shrine blocked the wave of radiation, shielding the village. I asked about the rumor, but the person living in the shrine laughed my question down saying, “Oh, I have heard about it!”  Maybe the TV clues wanted to create an emotional episode that a shinto shrine protected the village from radiation.

The United States once had Islamic State of Iraq and al-Shams (ISIS) leader Abu Bakr al Baghdadi in custody at a detention facility in Iraq, but president Barack Obama let him go, it was revealed on Friday.

Al Baghdadi was among the prisoners released in 2009 from the U.S.’s now-closed Camp Bucca near Umm Qasr in Iraq.
