Neighbor Sours on Boy's 'Illegal' Lemonade StandDunedin Patch – by Sherri Lonon

A Dunedin boy’s lemonade stand is at the center of an ongoing controversy with a neighbor who says the operation is hurting his property value and disrupting his “quiet home and neighborhood.”

Entrepreneurial T.J. Guerrero, 12, opened the lemonade stand in his Dunedin neighborhood about two years ago. After careful market testing, he determined the best location was on the corner of Patricia Avenue and San Salvador Drive, between the hours of 3 and 7 p.m., the Tampa Bay Times reported. The boy even secured permission from a neighbor to set up shop outside his home and other neighbors support the boy’s quest to earn his own spending money by offering their driveways up for parking if the need arises.   Continue reading “Neighbor Sours on Boy’s ‘Illegal’ Lemonade Stand”

MIDLAND, Texas (AP) – Indicted Texas Gov. Rick Perry says he believes taxpayers should have picked up his legal tab but opted to use campaign funds “to keep from having folks grouse about it.”

The possible 2016 Republican presidential candidate told reporters Tuesday in Midland that he had considered it appropriate for state funds to pay his legal fees because a criminal investigation dealt with his official duties as governor.

Perry has pleaded not guilty to two felony charges of abuse of power. At least $80,000 in taxpayer dollars have been spent on his defense so far.   Continue reading “Perry: To deter grousing, state won’t pay lawyers”

Pink Slime is Back to Save You MoneyNutritional Anarchy

Remember how horrified people were to learn of the ammonia-soaked pink slime in their ground beef and fast-food burgers?

It was so bad that one company, Beef Products Inc., was forced to close several plants and file for bankruptcy after the backlash in 2012. Incidentally, BPI filed a 1.2 billion dollar lawsuit is pending against ABC for breaking the story that more than 70% of grocery store ground beef contained pink slime.   Continue reading “On a Budget? Where do the worlds of online dating and small farms overlap? Not with Tinder dates at the farmers market—at least not in this instance. Tech veterans Duane Dahl and Cindy Henry first partnered to help daters find what they were looking for on Perfect Match. Now they want to connect farmers and consumers over, say, a ripe Brandywine tomato—equally swoon-worthy. Their website, Agrilicious, wants to connect users with their local ag economy, and they want to make it click-of-the-mouse easy.

The goal for a site devoted to all things local food, Dahl explained, is to make mainstream a widespread yet fragmented conversation happening at kitchen tables, in corner breakfast joints, and at white tablecloth paeans to fine dining: Where did our food come from?   Continue reading “It’s Like Tinder but for Local Food”

ChinaSovereign Man – by Simon Black

A few days ago I had a conversation with the Chief Operating Officer for our agricultural fund in Chile.

We were discussing water, and he told me that roughly 60% of California right now is suffering “extreme drought” conditions. 30% of the state is in “severe drought”. And 10% of the state is only under “drought”.

In other words, roughly the entire state– the 8th largest economy in the world– is facing a severe shortage of water.   Continue reading “This is epic: China has lost 55% of its most valuable resource”

Traveling from Shanghai to San Francisco in under two hours may sound like a fantasy, but China believes it’s figured out how to design an underwater vehicle that can make the idea a reality.

More worryingly, though, is the possibility that the technology will be used to develop even more dangerous weaponry.   Continue reading “Futuristic Chinese ‘supersonic’ sub could reach US shores in under two hours”

The Pentagon was forced to terminate the testing of a hypersonic weapon on Monday only moments after liftoff, creating a setback for a program that the military hopes will someday allow for any target on Earth to be obliterated in under an hour.

Monday morning’s launch of a rocket carrying the Advanced Hypersonic Weapon from a test range in Alaska marked the second time since 2011 that the United States Army has attempted to deploy a missile capable of reaching speeds of Mach 5 or higher — or 3,600 miles-per-hour at a minimum — which, if all goes as planned, “will allow the Department of Defense to engage any target anywhere in the world in less than an hour,” DOD spokesperson Maureen Schumann told the Associated Press.   Continue reading “Hypersonic Advanced Weapon test fails four seconds after launch”

Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) wrote in a letter to President Barack Obama on Tuesday that he is “increasingly alarmed” at the president’s plans for an executive action that would grant amnesty to upwards of 5 to 6 million illegal aliens.

Rubio begins his letter to Obama by noting how he had, last year, joined the Senate’s “Gang of Eight” but has since learned that such a comprehensive pathway forward on immigration is not possible due to Americans’ deep distrust of the federal government when it comes to immigration and other matters.   Continue reading “Rubio To Obama: I’m ‘Increasingly Alarmed’ At Your Planned Executive Amnesty”

California is seeking funding for a statewide earthquake early-warning system to give residents some prior notice in the case of future temblors. The effort has new urgency following the magnitude-6.0 quake in Napa Valley on Sunday.

State Democratic Sen. Alex Padilla’s law calling for such a warning system was approved by the Legislature last year. The California Office of Emergency Services (OES) is working to finalize a funding plan for the $80 million alert operation by early next year, he told KPCC.   Continue reading “California plans to build quake early-warning system after Napa Valley shaken”

RENO, Nev. (AP) — Hundreds of travelers on the road to Burning Man in their quest for oneness with nature and celebration of self-expression on a peaceful playa in northern Nevada’s desert didn’t expect to spend their first night in the parking lot of a Wal-Mart or Reno resort casino.

But most were taking it in stride and were largely optimistic — as so-called “Burners” are apt to be — that the gates to the counterculture event would reopen Tuesday after rare rain showers in the Black Rock Desert turned the ancient lake bottom to a muddy quagmire the day before.   Continue reading “Rain delays Burning Man voyagers at Reno Wal-Mart”
