A new government watchdog group found that the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs facility in Denver violated policy by keeping improper wait lists to track mental health care that veterans received.

Investigators with the VA Office of Inspector General confirmed whistleblower and former VA employee Brian Smother’s claim that staff kept unauthorized lists instead of using the department’s official wait list system.   Continue reading “Colorado VA kept secret wait lists for vets’ mental health care”

Scientists have warned there could be a big increase in numbers of devastating earthquakes around the world next year. They believe variations in the speed of Earth’s rotation could trigger intense seismic activity, particularly in heavily populated tropical regions.

Although such fluctuations in rotation are small – changing the length of the day by a millisecond – they could still be implicated in the release of vast amounts of underground energy, it is argued.   Continue reading “Upsurge in big earthquakes predicted for 2018 as Earth rotation slows”

WASHINGTON (AP) — The White House says it’s willing to strike a health care provision from Senate legislation to cut taxes and overhaul the tax code if the provision becomes an impediment to passing one of President Donald Trump’s top legislative priorities.

The provision would repeal a requirement that everyone in the U.S. have health insurance or pay a fine, but it has emerged as a major sticking point for Republican Sen. Susan Collins of Maine, whose vote the White House needs. Collins said Sunday that the issue should be dealt with separately.   Continue reading “White House open to striking health provision from tax bill”

Doug Jones, the Democrat running for Alabama’s U.S. Senate seat, says he loves to hunt but the Second Amendment has “limitations.”

He believes that every right enumerated in the Bill of Rights is limited, and the Second Amendment is no exception.

According to the Alabama Political Reporter, Jones described himself as “a Second Amendment guy,” but stressed that some gun control is necessary. He said, “We’ve got limitations on all constitutional amendments in one form or another.” This position is contrary to the clear language of the amendment, which states that the right to keep and bear arms “shall not be infringed.”   Continue reading “Democrat Doug Jones: The Second Amendment Has ‘Limitations’”

New so-called “vice taxes” on cigarettes and alcohol have been one of the few popular taxes among Wyomingites. A poll last year found that 81 percent favored raising taxes on alcohol and 78 percent favored raising them on cigarettes.

Now, the Legislature’s Interim Joint Revenue Committee is moving forward on both proposals. While the committee’s consideration of a $1 per pack increase on cigarettes drew more attention and discussion at its meeting in Cheyenne earlier this month, the panel also advanced proposals to raise three separate alcohol taxes:

I received an email this morning informing me that our brother Millard had passed away on Saturday.  Millard was very well known in the Trenches.  He and Diggerdan were my friends.  After Digger died it had been Millard’s intent to come to Oregon where we would take his ashes to Gold Beach where Dan grew up.  His failing health made the trip impossible.

Millard was a true friend to me.  Though I never had the privilege of shaking his hand, through email and phone conversations, we had become very close.  I last talked to him I believe it was about a month ago.  I hadn’t seen his comments so I had called him.  He simply said he was okay, but he was backing away for a little bit.  I knew his health was failing.  I wish I could have had the time for just a little more conversation.     Continue reading “Trencher Alert: Our Brother Millard Has Moved On To The Next World”

HOUSTON, TEXAS — A gas station owner is lucky to be alive after being shot multiple times in the left arm by a few armed thugs, and he was still able to return fire and survive the awful encounter.

Making coffee for customers seems like a pretty simple and safe thing to do, but store owner Mohammed Kahloon knew better. That’s why Kahloon carries a firearm at all times while he’s working, because he knows that he could need his firearm for self-defense in an instant.   Continue reading “Armed Gas Station Owner Shot Multiple Times, Returns Fire And Survives Encounter”

It has been over one month since the latest dangerous piece of legislation meant to infringe on Americans’ constitutional rights was introduced, and Congress is now moving forward with the bill that will have serious ramifications for all Americans by blatantly violating the freedoms guaranteed by the Fourth Amendment if it becomes law.

The USA Liberty Act has passed the House Judiciary Committee by a vote of 27-8, and as Congressman Justin Amash noted, all privacy advocates should be concerned about the overwhelming support the bill is receiving from Congress.   Continue reading “Media Silent as Fed Committee Quietly Passes Act Allowing Warrantless Searches”
